Health & Safety

Costa RicaA successful study abroad experience must first be a safe experience. While no one can guarantee safety while traveling abroad (or anywhere for that matter), the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay does place safety as the highest concern in offering overseas programming. While no single plan can address all contingencies, listed below are a few of the ways UW-Green Bay works to keep study abroad as safe as possible.

  1. UWGB regularly monitors and follows U.S. State Department Travel Alert and Travel Warning messages.
  2. UWGB monitors safety issues in collaboration with our program partners, on-site directors, and faculty leaders for comprehensive security and quality management.
  3. UWGB registers all travelers with the U.S. Embassy in countries where a study abroad experience takes place.
  4. UWGB provides all study abroad participants with international health insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation, repatriation, reunion, security evacuation, accidental/emergency dental, maternity, chiropractic care, physiotherapy, as well as trip cancellation and return ticket compensation.
  5. All participants are required to complete an orientation program which stresses country-specific cultural and safety precautions.
  6. All participants are provided an emergency response contact card that includes contact information for the nearest U.S Consulate and Embassy as well as direct dial instructions to connect callers to UWGB Office of International Education staff 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  7. Emergency procedures are in place, including medical and general emergency evacuation procedures.
  8. All program leaders who accompany a UWGB study abroad program are required to attend pre-departure meetings that review emergency response protocol.
  9. Program leaders carry an international cell phone to facilitate emergency communications.
  10. The majority of travel expenses are paid in advance, reducing the need to carry large amounts of cash.
  11. All participants are held to uniform rules of responsibility, conduct, and behavior. UWGB reserves the right to dismiss any participant for unacceptable behavior; including behaviors that compromise health and safety.
