   Campus Seen
Planting plastic

No need for gravel or other filler in the new ornamental planters on the remodeled Student Services plaza, when the base layer consists of used soft-drink and water bottles. The campus Sustainability Committee says the unique application makes a point about plastic bottles and their refusal to decay (estimated life span: 450 years). The project also gave faculty, staff and students the opportunity to put a message in a bottle and create their own time capsules to be buried beneath the topsoil.
