Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society for first-year students with less than 32 credits. The UW-Green Bay chapter was started on March 16, 1992 under the direction of Dr. Michael Murphy, Professor Emeritus of Humanistic Studies.

The mission of Phi Eta Sigma is to encourage and reward academic excellence among first-year students in institutions of higher education. Phi Eta Sigma places high emphasis on participation in community activities. Members of our chapter have participated in such events, as Adopt a Highway, providing Christmas presents for a local family through the Salvation Army, the Jingle Bell Run, and the March of Dimes annual walk-a-thon.

The one time fee for Phi Eta Sigma is $70 [effective fall 2019] for a life time membership. Thirty-five dollars of this goes to the National Office to pay for an academic tie tac, a membership certificate, and a copy of the national magazine, Forum of Phi Eta Sigma. The fee also pays a portion of the expenses for a chapter delegate to attend the national convention every two years and to support scholarships awarded through the Founder's Fund of Phi Eta Sigma. Four Endowed Graduate Scholarships of $7500 each for the first year of full-time graduate or professional study and eighty four Undergraduate Awards ranging from the $10,000 Thomas Arkle Clark Scholar-Leader of the Year Scholarship to $1000. Undergraduate Awards are awarded each year. The remainder of the membership dues is to fund social, educational, and community service prjects that the chapter holds throughout the year.
