"Spatial and Temporal Structure of Breeding Bird Communities at the Wabikon Forest Dynamics Plot in Northern Wisconsin"

Grant in Aid of Research

Final Report: "During summer 2013 I completed the first field season of a new project on bird population dynamics in northern forests with help from a Research Council Grant in Aid of Research. Collaborators on this project included UW‐Green Bay Professor Robert Howe, Cofrin Center for Biodiversity Data Specialist Erin Giese, and graduate students Tom Prestby, Nick Walton, Stephanie Beilke, Jesse Weinzinger, and Chelsea Gunther. We conducted systematic point counts and collected archival audio recordings on 8 dates: May 26, June 4, June 11, June 18, June 24‐25, July 2, and July 9, 2013. Although we are still analyzing the data, Howe and I traveled to the Smithsonian Institution’s Conservation Biology Institute at Front Royal Virginia on July 29‐30th 2013 to participate in an international workshop entitled “Diversity and Forest Change: Characterizing functional and genetic contributions to diversity gradients and dynamics in tree communities.” During this workshop we gave an evening presentation on our summer work entitled “Sampling Birds in Forest Dynamics Plots,” attended by approximately 40 scientists representing every continent except Antarctica. We also had very productive meetings with researchers from China, with whom we will be collaborating on a project comparing bird assemblages in tropical and temperate forests of North America, Asia, and eventually other continents. I am very grateful for this research opportunity and thank the Research Council for generously supporting my work on this and other projects."
