Do you need to register?

If you are voting at the same address as the last time you voted, you should already be registered. If you have moved in to a new address or even changed apartment numbers, or if you have changed your legal name since the last time you voted, you will need to re-register. You will also need to register if you are a first time voter.

How to register to vote

You have three options for registering to vote.

  1. Register by mail more than 20 days prior
  2. Register in person at several locations
  3. Register at your Polling Station on Election Day.

Important note: If you have been issued a WI driver license or WI DOT-issued ID that is current and valid, you must provide the number and expiration date. If your WI driver license is revoked, suspended or expired; or your WI DOT-issued ID is expired, provide the number and the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. If you have not been issued a WI driver license or WI DOT-issued ID, you must provide the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. If you have none of these documents, you will be able to indicate that fact.

You must provide a Proof of Residence Document when registering to vote in Wisconsin. A Proof of Residence Document is a document that proves where you live in Wisconsin. Please see the Proof of Residence handout for a list of acceptable documents.

  • To register by mail more than 20 days prior to the election: Read the instructions on this page and click on the appropriate link for a printable registration form including instructions on how to fill it out. Mail your completed copy of this form to the City Clerk's office.
  • To register in person more than 20 days prior to the election:You can go to the Green Bay City Clerk's office, Room 103, City-County Building, 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. There may also be other locations prior to the election. If someone offers to register you, ask to see their ID as a certified special registration deputy.

    To register in person up until 6 pm the Friday before an election: You can go to the Green Bay City Clerk's Office, Room 103, City-County Building, 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Everyone needs to provide acceptable proof of current residence to register this close to the election. (See acceptable forms of proof listed below) All proofs of address must be printed out.
  • To register on Election Day at your Polling Station: You will need the same items needed to register at the clerk's office as described above. Being pre-registered helps you vote faster on Election Day, but registering at the polls is completely permissible.

Acceptable proofs of current address for registering

The following are acceptable proofs of current address for registering, but they must have your current name and address printed on them:

Preferred

  • A printed copy of the Self-service Enrollment Verification Letter.
  • A current and valid Wisconsin driver's license or Wisconsin identification card with current address.

Accepted

  • Any other official identification card or license issued by a Wisconsin governmental body or unit
  • An identification card issued by an employer in the normal course of business, which has a photograph of the cardholder, but not a business card.
  • A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of the election.
  • A current residential lease.
  • A UW-Green Bay Campus ID with a photograph of the cardholder, accompanied by a fee statement for the current semester.
  • A utility bill for the period commencing not earlier than 90 days before the election. (printed copy of online bill ok)
  • A bank statement. (printed copy of online statement ok)
  • A paycheck.
  • A check or other document issued by a unit of government, including the University of Wisconsin.
  • A printed copy of your current bursar's statement.

In lieu of a paper copy of individuals may present an electronic display on a smartphone or computer of a qualifying document to prove their address for residency verification.
