Funding Internships

Welcome to the Environmental Management and Business Institute (EMBI) internship program! This internship program is designed to provide challenging, unique, and rewarding opportunities to students and their partner organizations. At the partner organizations, interns will be evaluating environmental issues, identifying possible solutions, assessing their feasibility and financial benefits, and ultimately implementing the best solutions when possible.

EMBI will strive to work with public- and private-sector partners throughout the New North region to make the region synonymous with sustainability and environmental leadership. Helping businesses
develop opportunities to reduce their environmental impact while increasing profitability is good for business. Today's public view has evolved to where "good business" is not only profitable, but is also recognized for good stewardship of the environment. With the campus past its 40-year milestone, the EMBI will provide a focal point for learning and research across UW-Green Bay's academic programs with regard to local, regional and global environmental problems.

Establishing an Internship

Several different funding options are available to partner organizations wishing to host an EMBI internship. These options are summarized in more detail below:

  • Contract with EMBI – A contract with EMBI can be negotiated by the sponsoring organization. EMBI would assist in identifying the appropriate students and be responsible for payroll management. The sponsoring organization would be responsible for providing suitable space for the student and onsite supervision in accordance with the EMBI Internship Manual. Hourly rates for interns typically range from $8-12/hour, with additional fringe and indirect costs in accordance with University policy.
  • Contract with EMBI, including funding for additional EMBI technical support - In addition to support for the student intern, additional technical support would be provided by EMBI staff or other UWGB faculty with the appropriate expertise (Business, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, etc.), with the level of commitment being negotiable. The sponsoring organization would be responsible for providing suitable space for the student and on-site supervision in accordance with the EMBI Internship Manual.
  • Direct Hire – Student(s) can be hired directly by the sponsoring organization at an hourly rate consistent with their normal practices. EMBI would assist in identifying appropriate students, but the sponsoring organization would be responsible for all payroll management issues.
  • EMBI Funded Internship – A limited number of paid internships are available, with funding for these internships generated through grants and other revenue obtained by EMBI. These internships are generally targeted toward small businesses with limited resources or companies that are not familiar with EMBI, but would like to host an intern on a trial basis. Similar to having a contract with EMBI, the sponsoring organization would still be responsible for providing suitable space for the student and onsite supervision in accordance with the EMBI Internship Manual.
  • Unpaid Internship – Given the challenging economic times for students, unpaid internships are typically less attractive to students. However, students seeking experience in a specific area or industry sector may still consider this option. Similar to having a contract with EMBI, the sponsoring organization would still be responsible for providing suitable space for the student and on-site supervision in accordance with the EMBI Internship Manual.
