Admissions Testing
As a rule, all incoming freshmen and some transfer students are required to take the Wisconsin Mathematics Placement test prior to registering at UW Green Bay, or within their first semester. Optional Placement Tests for Foreign Language are available in French, Spanish and German. UWGB students are strongly encouraged (but not required) to take the Foreign Language Placement Test if you have studied foreign language in middle or high school, and you plan to continue your study at the college-level. These tests are used to place you into the appropriate math and foreign language courses. UWGB students do not take the English Placement Test because UWGB places students in their first English course based upon their ACT or SAT I scores. It is important that you do your best on these tests. You may be required to take remedial classes if your scores are low.
- Regional Placement Testing (testing throughout the state of WI in March-June)
- Residual Placement Testing (testing at UW-Green Bay throughout the year for UWGB students)
Testing Policies
ACT/SAT I Testing Policy
-
All matriculated students classified as new freshmen must submit official ACT or SAT I scores to the Office of the Registrar.
This policy is effective July 1, 1997. Updated July 1, 2002.
Composition Placement Policy
-
For purposes of determining appropriate English course placement, the University uses the ACT examination. Freshmen who wish to enroll in any English course, other than Fundamentals of Writing (Eng Comp 093), must satisfy the course prerequisites by doing one of the following:
Submit a satisfactory ACT English score to the Office of the Registrar (SAT I English scores are an acceptable substitute for out-of-state students). The scores must be official.
Transfer in an appropriate prerequisite, college-level course.
-
Transfer students who do not have an acceptable ACT or SAT I score and who have not satisfactorily completed and transferred in a college-level course in English have the prerogative of enrolling in Fundamentals of Writing (Eng Comp 093).
-
Satisfactory completion of the CLEP College Composition (includes essay) will yield credit for Eng Comp 100 (College Writing), and will satisfy the prerequisite for Eng Comp 105 (Expository Writing).
-
Students who wish to appeal their English course placement, as determined by the ACT or SAT I, should contact the Director of the Composition Program. His/her decision is final and will be communicated to the Registrar in writing.
- International students with TOEFL scores of 600 or above (paper-based), 250 or above (computer-based) or 100 or above (internet-based) are exempted from English as a Second Language (ESL) placement testing at UW-Green Bay and may be placed in ENG COMP 100 College Writing. International students admitted with lower TOEFL scores will take the UW-Green Bay English placement exam upon their arrival; they will then be placed in appropriate English courses based on their English exam scores. International students from English speaking countries (e.g. England, Canada) need to complete the same requirements as out-of-state students.
This policy is effective July 1, 1997. Updated September 13, 2012.
English Competency Requirement
-
In order to satisfy the UW-Green Bay English Competency Requirement students must do one of the following:
-
Achieve an English subtest score of 25 or higher on the ACT (or a comparable score on the SAT I).
-
Transfer in a course equivalent to Eng Comp 100 (College Writing) or a course for which college-level English is a prerequisite.
-
Satisfactory completion of the CLEP College Composition which yields credit for Eng Comp 100 (College Writing).
-
Satisfactory completion of Eng Comp 100 (College Writing).
-
Entry on another UW transcript indicating their English competency requirement had been met.
This policy is effective July 1, 1997. Updated September 13, 2012.

Mathematics Placement Test (WMPT) Policy
-
All entering students classified as new freshmen must submit official WMPT scores to the Office of the Registrar prior to the end of their first semester at UW-Green Bay. Students who transfer in a course equivalent to or higher than Math 094 (Elementary Algebra) are exempted from this requirement.
-
All entering students, classified as new freshmen, who do not take the WMPT prior to their first semester of enrollment will have a hold placed on their second semester registration until they complete the test.
-
Students are allowed one retest and there must be a two-week window before taking the retest.
-
The Mathematics Placement Test is meant as a placement tool for enrolling into certain math courses. Students can not take the Math Placement Test, enroll and take a math course (at UW-Green Bay or any other transfer institution), then retake the Math Placement Test again after enrolling and taking a math course (in hopes of doing better on the test and placing into a higher level).
This policy is effective July 1, 1997. Updated September 13, 2012.

Mathematics Course Placement Policy
-
For purposes of determining appropriate mathematics course placement, the University uses the WMPT examination. Students who wish to enroll in any mathematics course, other than Math 094 (Elementary Algebra), must satisfy the course prerequisites by doing one of the following:
Submit an official WMPT score to the Office of the Registrar.
Transfer in an appropriate prerequisite, college-level course.
-
Students classified as new freshmen, who do not complete the WMPT (with the exception of out-of-state students) will not be allowed to register for mathematics classes, or for courses with college level mathematics as a prerequisite, during their first semester.
-
Students who have not taken the WMPT and have not satisfactorily completed and transferred in a college level course in mathematics have the prerogative of enrolling in Math 094 (Elementary Algebra).
-
Out-of-state students classified as new freshmen may be placed in mathematics classes during their first semester if they have not taken the WMPT. In these instances, placement should be determined by an adviser based on their ACT/SAT I scores, grades, mathematics classes completed in high school and other relevant information. Out-of-state students must still complete the WMPT in their initial semester or a hold will be placed on their registration for the following semester.
-
Students who wish to appeal their mathematics course placement, as determined by the WMPT, should contact the Chair of the Mathematics Program. His/her decision is final and will be communicated to the Registrar in writing.
-
All international students will be subject to the same policy as out-of-state students as outlined above.
This policy is effective July 1, 1997. Updated July 1, 2002.
Foreign Language Placement Tests
If you plan on enrolling in a French, German or Spanish course, it is recommended that you take the appropriate foreign language test. These tests are 60 minutes. Students placing into certain foreign language courses may be eligible for retrocredits upon completion of that UW-Green Bay course.
