Institutional Biosafety Committee

What is the IBC?

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is a local oversight community mandated by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to oversee research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules.  This original charge has been expanded by institutions to oversee several areas of research involving potentially hazardous biologics, such as: infectious agents and pathogens, biological toxins, animal-derived tissues, fluids and cells, xenotransplantation, nanotechnology, and Dual use research of concern (DURC). The IBC makes recommendations to the Institutional Official regarding guidelines and procedures for the review of research proposals as submitted by UW-Green Bay faculty, staff and students.
