Ellen Rosewall is Professor of Art and Design (Arts Management) at University of Wisconsin Green Bay and Coordinator of the Arts Management program. Her thirty years of experience in the arts industry make her uniquely qualified for this position. Rosewall began her career as a musician, taught music at MacPhail Center for the Arts in Minneapolis and had an active career as a freelance singer, actor and pianist in the Twin Cities before entering arts management full-time in 1989. She has been Executive Director of Schola Cantorum (Palo Alto, CA), Interim Director and Capital Campaign Manager of the Green Bay Botanical Garden, and Director of Marketing and Development at the Weidner. She has been President of Arts Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Public Radio Association and the Northeastern Wisconsin Arts Council. She currently serves as Vice President of the Association of Arts Administration Educators, an international service organization for arts management academic programs and has served on several local boards of directors including the ARTgarage, Film Green Bay (founding board member), and the Green Bay Community Theater. In 2012, Rosewall received the UWGB Founder’s Award for Community Service.
Rosewall is the author of Arts Management: Bringing Arts and Audiences Together in the 21st Century, published in 2013 by Oxford University Press and renowned as the standard textbook for introductory Arts Management courses. Her blog, “Artini: Arts Management with a Twist” is nationally known, and has led to speaking and teaching engagements across the country, including at American University, University of Oregon, Seattle University, and LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York. She has given presentations on arts management for Americans for the Arts, National Arts Marketing Program, Michigan Assembly for Community Arts Agencies, Association of Arts Administration Educators, and the International Society on Politics, Social Theory and the Arts, and has been published in the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society, Michigan ArtsLetter, and the Voice of Chorus America. In 2009 she was named an Arts In Crisis mentor through the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She is in demand as a consultant, working with arts organizations in small and large communities on fund-raising, strategic planning and audience development. She is in demand as a consultant, having recently done projects for Butler University, University of Kentucky, Third Avenue Playhouse, Edgerton Performing Arts Center, Milwaukee Ballet, and the Door Community Auditorium. From 2001 - 2006 she worked with the Wisconsin Arts Board on a multi-year project that provides community arts development to new arts organizations in small communities, a project funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Rosewall is an active advocate for the arts at the local, state and national level. She was a member of the Joint Legislative Council’s Special Committee on Arts Funding, which drafted successful legislation to create an endowment for the arts in Wisconsin in 2001. As President of Arts Wisconsin, she presided over three Arts Advocacy Days at the state capitol, and is a member of the founding committee of Arts Action Wisconsin and a charter member of the Arts Action Network.
