| Dec 31 |
This month was the snowiest December on record for Green
Bay with 28.9 inches, breaking the old record set in 1977 by nearly
2 inches. However, the snow was mostly not very dense so the monthly
precipitation as water was only 1.16 inches which is about 0.37"
below average! There was at least a trace of snow on 28 of 31 days,
and at least 1/2 inch of snow on 14 days. Greatest snow depth on the
ground was 17 inches on Dec 24. |
| Dec 18 |
A big snowstorm hit Wisconsin, dumping 6.1 inches in
Green Bay and much more to the south. Total snowfall in Green Bay
this winter is 24.5 inches. Last year at this time we had a total
of only 3.1 inches of snow. |
| Dec 13 |
Coldest day of the year so far. Morning temperature
at GB weather station was -8° F. Only 8 more days until winter
officially starts! Birds conspicuously numerous at our feeders. |
| Dec 11 |
A snow storm swings by mostly to our south. Green Bay
got 1.7 inches (plus 0.8 on the 10th). Milwaukee and Chicago area
received over 12 inches. |
| Dec 7 |
3.5 inches of snow brings our total for this winter
to 12.3 inches. Morning low temperature of -1° F is our first
below zero temperature this winter. HDD (heating degree days) a measure
of how cold our weather is overall, indicates this winter is slightly
cooler than average, so far. |
| Dec 5 |
Arctic air moves in for our coldest weather this Fall
with lows in the single digits (GB low of 2° F). |
| Dec 1 |
The East River in Allouez froze 12/01, which is
about average for the last ten years. It had been ice-covered beginning
on Nov 17, but opened up briefly on Nov 30. I have been recording
the start dates for continuous winter ice at the same location since
1991, and end dates in spring since 1986. Below are the start dates.
