I really did see an Alligator
along Highway 41 south of Green Bay (see yesterday's entry). I neglected
to mention how far south it was. U.S.
Highway 41 runs through Green Bay and the Fox Valley and beyond.
It begins at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula in the farthest north
region of the upper peninsula of Michigan and runs over 2000 miles
south, nearly to the tip of Florida where it ends at the Atlantic
Ocean in Miami. Alligators,
Anhingas and even Wood Storks were
conspicuous along the roadside of Highway 41 between Naples and Miami,
where it is known as the Tamiami Trail. It's just a slow news day,
but there is a lesson here that emphasizes the need for detail in
daily field notes. |

Not much to report for current
phenology so I'll retrieve a recent note I neglected to enter. On
January 14th I saw an Alligator along Hiway 41 south of Green
Bay. I'll explain tomorrow. |

There is very
little snow in Green Bay--not even enough to fully cover the
lawns. A couple cold days and nights have increased the ice cover
on Green Bay, but there is still open water near the mouth
of the Fox River, where there were numerous Canada Geese,
a variety of ducks, several young Double-crested Cormorants and 3
or 4 Bald Eagles. |
