| Although the first Canada goldenrods (Solidago canadensis) began to flower several weeks ago, most are not yet flowering on UW-Green Bay's Cofrin Arboretum. |

| Some highbush cranberry (Viburnum trilobum) fruits are turning red. The first sign of new leaves emerging from the winter buds was March 20 and the start of flowering was May 16. Typically, most fruits remain on the branches through the winter, and are either eaten by returning migrant birds in the spring, or they fall to the ground as the buds begin to open. |

Green Bay received 0.48 inches of rain, and some local areas, including Allouez and Bellevue had more. After the very hot and dry weather earlier in the year, Green Bay is now above "normal" for precipitation in the month of August. |

From Aug 8 through today the high temperatures have been in the 70's (one 68) and much more comfortable. |

Light rain began last night by about 10:00 p.m. and continued throughout the night, still raining at 11:00 a.m.this morning. The total is not great--perhaps a half inch or a little more by 9 a.m., but it will benefit the plants. [the rain continued though and the dailly total was 1.99 inches]
Today's high temperature was 68° F, the lowest high temperature since June 1. |

| The tall prairie grasses are now very conspicuous in the prairie of UW-Green Bay's Cofrin Arboretum. |

| The fruits of red baneberry (Actaea rubra) are ripe now. The common name not withstanding, the berries can also be white in this species. And to make matters worse there is another species called white baneberry which does have white fruits. This is just another example of why we must use the scientific names if we want to be precise in identifying plants and animals. |
