Nov 30

Green Bay's monthly temperature for November was only -0.3° F below the average of 34.6° and our lowest temperature for the month was 6° F. The precipitation for the month was 3.44 inches, as water equivalent, which is about 1.31 inches (62%) more than "normal". We had a total of 1.2 inches of snow and the NOAA weather station in Green Bay reported a "trace" of snow on 7 additional days.

There was a little light snow this morning in Green Bay, and strong winds continued in the wake of yesterday's storms farther south. Winds of 40 mph are predicted for today and even stronger in Door County to the east.

Strong, late-season storms moved through the midwest today with tornados and generally high winds in northern Illinois and to a lesser degree in southeastern Wisconsin. Subsequently, hundreds of thousands of people are reported to be without electrical power. Green Bay received 0.45 inches of rain and temperatures remained mild with a high of 58 F.

Much of northeastern Wisconsin received some rain today, and I even heard 2 loud claps of thunder in Green Bay where (0.95 inches) of rain was reported. The temperatures were mild however, with a high temperature of 58° F.

This Bald Eagle was a surprise this morning in a tree near the East River, as I walked my dog.

Here's a view from UW-Green Bay toward the mouth of the Fox River, with a few ducks in the foreground. With a little effort you can pick out the Leo Frigo (HIghway I-43) bridge and Bay Beach Park, including the recently added roller coaster.

Green Bay's low temperature was 20° F. Warmer air should move in today.

The morning low temperature in Green Bay was 19° F, the lowest of the season to date and it hasn't been above freezing since before 8:00 a.m. yesterday (still only 25° F at 10:00 a.m. today).

The cold temperature overnight brought Green Bay's first substantial ice along the shoreline.

Green Bay received a dusting of snow this morning, the first snow of more than a few flakes. Much colder air approaches from the north.

I'm told they have been back for several weeks, but there are now hundreds of Tundra Swans on lower Green Bay, between the mouth of Duck Creek and the new highway to Cat Island.

Laona, 100 miles NNW had 3.8 inches of snow today.

A rainy and windy day in Green Bay, as here on the Green Bay shoreline at UWGB. The rain began last night and continued until about noon today, for a total of 1.39 inches. The Green Bay weather station also reported just a little snow in the evening.

Farther north in Forest, Florence and Vilas Counties there are reports of 1-2 inches and even 3 inches of snow at Lac Vieux Desert. Also snow farther to the northwest.

In the area around the City of Green Bay many trees have lost all or most of their leaves, especially the commonest and most abundant species such as green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), box elder (Acer negundo), and cottonwood (Populus deltoides). Other species generally leafless now include: white birch (Betula papyrifera), quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), and wild cherries (Prunus serotina and Prunus virginiana).

Species still holding leaves include the invasive buckthorns (Rhamnus cathartica and Frangula alnus), Norway maple (Acer platanoides) and to a lesser degree silver maple (Acer saccharinum). The oaks also tend to hang onto their leaves, even after they turn brown (see Nov. 4). The photo at left shows still-green leaves of European buckthorn under the mostly bare branches of other species. If you look carefully, you may also notice green leaves still on the branches of a crack willow (Salix fragilis, another alien species) behind the other trees, toward the right side.
