| June30 |
Clasping Dogbane
(Apocynum sibiricum) and Enchanter's Nightshade (Circaea
lutetiana) first day of flower. Also Tall Anemone (Anemone
virginiana) in flower, but not first day, UWGB (Gary Fewless).
Very hot and humid, high temperature of 92F,
the hottest day of the year to date. Many plants "wilting"
in the heat, and animals too, as in this photo by Matt Welter of
baby Robins on Friday
(Gary Fewless).
Many people have commented on how rainy June was
this year. It did rain many times, at least a trace of rain on
18 of 30 days. However the amount of water received was only
about 1/16 inch above average for June.
Note a couple of late entries for butterflies on
June 23 and 28. |
| June29 |

Tragopogon dubius, began to flower 06/02.
Orange Day Lily (Hemerocallis fulva)
and Mayweed
(Anthemis cotula) first flower, UWGB (Gary Fewless).
The fact that "Mayweed" doesn't flower until late June
is not as illogical as it may seem. This species is found in all
50 states, north from Newfoundland to Alaska and south beyond the
borders of the U.S.A., in addition to it's native range in Europe,
so it probably does flower in May in some parts of its range. It
is closely related to Chamomile, and is roughly similar in appearance,
but it has an unpleasant odor quite unlike Chamomile. Daylilies
also in flower in Shawano County (Joel Whitehouse).
The water level in Green Bay (and Lake Michigan)
is up about 10 inches compared to last year at this time. On average
the lake level reaches an annual high point in July and then falls
until January or February. Major deviation from average weather
can alter this cycle to some extent.
The first Pearl Crescent butterfly (Phyciodes
tharos) that I've seen this year, City GB (Gary Fewless). If
someone has seen this one long since, please let me know.
Aphrodite fritillary
(Speyeria aphrodite), T. of Cooperstown, Manitowoc
County (Joel Trick).

and shadows fainter and more purple, West De Pere (Matt Welter).

and Grass Pink (Calopogon tuberosus) in Flower. Bog

State Forest, Jackson County, WI (Andy Paulios). |

the edges of sidewalks, etc.

borealis) conspicuously in flower, Vilas County (Andy Paulios).
