Anemone canadensis (Canada anemone) and Hydrophyllum virginianum (Virginia waterleaf) in flower, UWGB. Both common names of these plants are exact translations of the Latin names.

Also new in flower on UWGB, Trifolium repens (white clover), Trifolium hybridum (alsike clover) and Trifolium pratense (red clover), Baptisia alba (white wild indigo), and Osmorhiza longistylis (long-styled sweet-cicely)

There were strong thunderstorms overnight May 27/28. High winds blew down trees and power lines and heavy rains caused some small streams in the Green bay area to "flash" with substantial flooding of UWGB's Mahon Creek and nearby Baird's Creek. Green Bay received 1.53 inches of rain.

Green Bay reached a high temperature of 88° F today, one degree below the record high for this date. High humidity contributed to an unseasonably hot day, as part of the Memorial Day weekend.

Vicia americana (American vetch) in flower, UWGB, and several weedy aliens species also: Elaeagnus umbellatus (autumn olive), Leucanthemum vulgare (ox-eye daisy), Sisymbrium altissimum (tall tumble mustard).

Prunus serotina (black cherry) in flower, UWGB.

Also Pinus sylvestris (Scotch Pine) is in "flower" (anthesis). This is mostly a cultivated tree here, but it is very commonly planted as an ornamental.

First day of flower (anthesis) for Poa pratensis (bluegrass) UWGB. The inflorescences have been open for several days, but I did not see any open anthers until today. This is a very common and abundant grass in our area and some people will suffer from allergies to this new pulse of pollen.

First day of fully open flowers for Lupinus perennis (wild lupine), Zizia aurea (golden alexanders), Erigeron philadelphicus (daisy fleabane) UWGB.

First Monarch butterfly on UWGB (see an even earlier note on May 16 for Town of Scott). This is the earliest I have ever seen Monarchs on UWGB.

A few green frogs doing the famous "banjo" note on UWGB's prairie Pond--the earliest I have recorded there.

I missed the start of flower for Hesperis matronalis (dame's rocket) while out of town. It happened between May 20 and 24, probably about May 22 based on level of development when I returned.

I have brushed a few off, but I still have not received my first mosquito bite of the year, in spite of considerable time in the forest!!

First day of flower for Tragopogon dubius (yellow goat's-beard), Brown County, Allouez.

There was a strong storm in northern Wisconsin today. In Green Bay there were strong winds out of the north all day. The average wind speed for the whole day was 23 mph, with the highest two minute average wind of 39 mph, and a peak wind of 49. Green Bay received about 2 inches of rain in the storm (including rain that continued into May 12). Green Bay's low temperature was 38 F and the high was 54 F, and there was some wet heavy snow farther north.

The storm blew down many trees and tree branches in northeastern Wisconsin and there were numerous power outages from electric lines knocked out by falling trees. The local news media reported about 10,000 Door County residents lost power during the storm. There was more tree damage on UWGB's Cofrin Arboretum than I have seen from any storm in the 30 years that I have been in close contact with it.

The high winds also produced a new "drift" of shells from the zebra mussels in Green Bay.

Geranium maculatum (wild geranium) new in flower today, UWGB. I saw a few open flowers yesterday in the Town of Lawrence, Brown County. Also the first day for fully open flowers on Lonicera xbella (showy bush honeysuckle), an invasive species in our forests. Also first day of flower for Prunus virginiana (choke cherry) in Allouez.

There was obvious new growth in grasses burned in UWGB's Keith White Prairie only 6 days ago. If there is a little rain and the weather is mild it is amazing how quickly the new growth follows a spring burn.

Phlox divaricata (wild blue phlox) has begun to flower, UW-Green Bay.

Maianthemum stellatum (False Solomon's-seal -- long known as Smilacina stelllata) and Mitella diphilla (bishop's-cap) have begun to flower, City of Green Bay.

I also saw Medicago lupulina (black medick) in flower on UWGB, but I obviously missed the first day.

Toads calling on Prairie Pond, UWGB. Last year I first heard them calling there May 07.

Zanthoxylum americanum (prickly ash) in flower (anthesis), UWGB.

Prunus pumila (dwarf sand cherry) and Waldsteinia fragarioides (barren strawberry) in flower in MAC Hall's Lenfesty Courtyard.

Cloudy and cool, high temperature of 57 and a little rain. Not much new to report.
