Mystery Photo October 26 2001: Hazelnuts
The photos below illustrate the difference between the
two species of Hazelnut in Wisconsin. American
Hazelnut is found nearly throughout the state, but Beaked Hazelnut
is mostly found in the northern half. Both species grow in a variety of
habitats, but do best on dry sites in full sun and may be very conspicuous
after forest fires in the north. The nuts are edible, but smaller than
their close relative the "filbert", and they require a fair
amount of work to remove the outer husks and then crack the nutshell within,
as shown below right.
