Phoenix Scholar Award
Rise with Us
Strong academics. Lower tuition. Real opportunity.
A Phoenix Scholar Award helps make college more affordable for high-achieving students who live outside Wisconsin. It's not a scholarship. It's not financial aid. It’s a powerful tuition discount—based on your grades or test scores—designed to help you earn your degree without the full cost of out-of-state tuition.

What do I need to do?
Nothing! Phoenix Scholar Awards are automatically applied to qualified students. If you qualify, you’ll be awarded the Phoenix Scholar Award automatically when you apply and are admitted to UW-Green Bay. You’ll get the highest award you’re eligible for based on your academic performance.
Who’s Eligible?
To qualify for a Phoenix Scholar Award, you must:
- Be a new first-year or transfer student
- Be an out-of-state or international student (non-resident for tuition purposes; includes Midwest Student Exchange students)
- Be enrolled in in-person classes
- Be seeking your first bachelor's degree
- Not exceed 150 attempted credits, including transfer and test credits
Taking online courses? Only your in-person credits count toward this award. Mixed schedules will reduce the award amount proportionally.
Phoenix Scholar Award Levels
Phoenix Scholar Award levels are based on past academic performance, specifically test scores or grade point average (seen in the table below). Use the information in the chart to determine your eligibility. The percentage listed is a remission (discount) in relation to the non-resident portion of tuition. A 100% remission would mean that a student’s non-resident tuition is reduced to the in-state tuition rate.

Additional Eligibility Requirements & Details
- Phoenix Scholar Awards will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters.
- The amount listed in a student's award letter is based on full time enrollment (12+ credits) while taking in-person classes. A mixture of in-person and online courses will also proportionally reduce the amount of the award, since online courses are charged at the WI resident tuition rate. (e.g. 6 in person and 6 online courses = 50% of award).
- Awards will be in effect until you complete your undergraduate degree or you attempt a total of 150 credits.
- The awardee must remain a non-resident student for tuition purposes in order to receive this award.
- The awardee must remain enrolled each fall and spring semester or the award will be discontinued. If you reapply to the university, you will be assessed for available Phoenix Scholar Awards at that time.
- In order to remain compliant with NCAA rules and regulations regarding equivalencies, the acceptance of an award, under this program, by any student-athlete is subject to Athletic Department approval.
