Passport Guide

According to the US Department of State, passport applications currently take about 6-9 weeks to process and you are required to submit a copy of your passport to the Office of International Education (CL 108) within weeks of your acceptance to the program, so apply now! Some programs may require a passport with the application process due to lengthy visa or permit procedures. If required this will be indicated on the program website and/or your study abroad application.

If you have a passport

  • Make sure it is in good condition (no pages missing or torn etc.)
  • Make sure it is valid for at least 6 months after your intended return date (this is recommended or required by countries)
  • If your passport will expire, please renew it right away!

If you do not have a passport

Some programs require you to have a visa (a document issued by the host country). If a visa is required your Office of International Education advisor will meet with you to review the process and requirements. To learn more about exit and entry requirements for countries and to find if a visa is needed please visit the U.S. Department of State Country Information.
