Why is Youth Mental Health Important?

There's a crisis of youth mental health, and we're responding to it with our Suicide Prevention Summit.

1 in 5 Kids Have Suicidal Thoughts

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 high school students have serious suicidal thoughts.

Second Leading Cause of Death

The CDC reports that suicide is the second leading cause of death for kids aged 12-18. On an average day, there are 3,703 suicide attempts by middle and high school students.

Increase in Anxiety

The 2023 Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 51.6% of high school students reported experiencing anxiety, up from 39.9% in 2017, and that 35% reported feeling sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in a row.

In 2021, Children’s Hospital Association (CHA), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry declared a national state of emergency in children’s mental health. We need to combat this crisis, and part of our work to do so happens at the Suicide Prevention Summit. With your help, we can continue offering resources like these to help improve kids' lives across Wisconsin.
