What is a Phoenix Scholar Award?

Affording college is important to you. And to us. That's why we are so excited to be able to offer a program that provides merit-based awards to non-resident undergraduate students, international students, and non-resident graduate students. For those who qualify for these awards, this benefit is intended to honor your strong academic performance, something we truly value at UW-Green Bay.

The Phoenix Scholar Awards provide a discounted tuition rate to non-resident undergraduate students who meet the academic criteria described below. This is not “financial aid” nor is it a “scholarship” in the traditional sense. Instead, it is a lower tuition rate offered to qualifying undergraduate students.

How do I qualify?

UW-Green Bay has set criteria for the levels of Phoenix Scholar Awards available to non-resident students based on their past academic performance, specifically test scores and grade point average. All students must also be enrolled full-time to receive a Phoenix Scholar Award. Please note, this award does not apply for Wisconsin and Minnesota residents, because the tuition rate for residents of these states is already discounted.

What do I need to do?

There is no separate application for Phoenix Scholar Awards.

Phoenix Scholar Awards are automatically applied to qualified non-resident students. However, if a student's residency status or academic performance changes, their eligibility for the Phoenix Scholar Awards may change as well.

Awards will be based on students' GPA or ACT score at the time of admission. Phoenix Scholar Awards are applied to your tuition until you complete your undergraduate degree or attempt 150 credits. Students must continue to attend full-time.

All re-entry students

A re-assessment of Phoenix Scholar Award eligibility will take place for students who re-apply for admission to UW-Green Bay after not enrolling for one semester or more.

If a student has completed fewer than 15 college credits at the time of the admission decision, we will use the new freshman criteria to determine the award eligibility. If a student has completed 15 or more credits at the time of the admission decision, we will use the transfer criteria to determine the award eligibility.

Eligibility requirements and details
  • Phoenix Scholar Awards will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters.
  • The amount listed in a student's award letter is based on full time enrollment (12+ credits) while taking ‘in person’ classes at the Green Bay campus.
    • Less than full time enrollment in ‘in person’ classes will proportionally reduce the amount of the award. (e.g. 6 credits = 50% of award)
    • A mixture of ‘in person’ and ‘online’ courses will also proportionally reduce the amount of the award, since online courses are charged at the WI resident tuition rate.  (e.g. 6 in person and 6 online courses = 50% of award)
  • Awards will be in effect until you complete your undergraduate degree or you attempt a total of 150 credits.
  • The awardee must remain a non-resident student for tuition purposes in order to receive this award.
  • The awardee must remain enrolled each fall and spring semester or your award will be discontinued. If you reapply to the university, you will be assessed for available Phoenix Scholar Awards at that time.
  • In order to remain compliant with NCAA rules and regulations regarding equivalencies, the acceptance of an award, under this program, by any student-athlete is subject to Athletic Department approval.
