Course Description

Situations of acute crisis can be dangerous and difficult situations in which to intervene. This training will provide participants with some concrete skills and tools to use to be able to maximize your effectiveness and reduce risk. We will provide a tool kit of ways to fine-tune your intervention strategy to attempt to maintain safety for you, the individual, and others involved.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Participants will be able to identify importance of, and learn skills of self-awareness as a component of intervening in crisis situations.
  • participants will learn and practice skills of active listening as a method of engagement with a person in crisis.
  • Participants will be able to describe skills of co-regulation skills, physical situational awareness, and verbal strategies for avoiding further engaging and increasing the chance of engaging an individual in crisis.

Brian Bean

Brian Bean is a training coordinator for Thresholds Youth and Young Adult Services in Chicago, Illinois. He has twenty years of experience in both practicing crisis intervention and training of direct care staff. He is a certified instructor in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, the Transition to Independence Process model, and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network Think Trauma curricula.
