Course Description
Join us for an insightful workshop where we explore the intersection of intellectual disabilities and the aging process. This workshop offers a comprehensive overview of the biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging in individuals with intellectual disabilities. We'll debunk common myths, discuss specific health, cognitive, and socialemotional challenges, and provide practical strategies for support and future planning. Participants will be assigned to a Zoom breakout room for small group Case Study discussion and then large group discussion and review of the individual Case Studies. Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify and explain the unique biological, psychological, and social challenges faced by aging individuals with intellectual disabilities.
- Participants will be able to differentiate between common myths and the realities of aging in individuals with intellectual disabilities, fostering a more accurate and empathetic understanding.
- Participants will be able to assess specific challenges related to health, cognitive changes, and social-emotional aspects in aging individuals with intellectual disabilities, using case studies and real-life examples.
- Participants will be able to outline the roles of caregivers, community resources, and legal and financial considerations in planning for the future and supporting aging individuals with intellectual disabilities.
