Course Description

This engaging and informative webinar is designed to equip mental health professionals with evidence-based tools to address NSSI in youth and young adults. The session will delve into the foundations of effective treatment and provide actionable intervention strategies across emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal domains to support clients struggling with self-injury. Participants will be introduced to a person-centered comprehensive treatment framework rooted in empathy, collaboration, and evidence-based practices. A major focus of the webinar will center on reviewing and demonstrating specific therapeutic strategies to address common drivers of NSSI and build adaptive coping resilience for each client. Emphasis will be placed on tailoring interventions to the unique needs of each client so that attendees leave with a solid understanding of effective treatment strategies and confidence to support clients on their path to healing. Case studies and interactive activities will be utilized to bring the strategies to life and enhance application to one’s own practice. Having basic knowledge of NSSI is recommended as this webinar will assume familiarity with NSSI and solely focus on treatment approaches.

About the Trainer

Jennifer J. Muehlenkamp, PhD

Jennifer Muehlenkamp received her PhD in clinical psychology from Northern Illinois University in 2005 after complete a 1-year pre-doctoral internship at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY.  Jennifer is a licensed clinical psychologist and joined the Faculty at UWED in the fall of 2009.  

Jennifer’s research broadly focuses on understanding suicidal behavior and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in youth and young adults.  Specifically, she examines psychological and sociocultural factors that may increase, or reduce, and individual’s vulnerability for engaging in NSSI and/or suicidal behavior.  She also examines the complex and inter-related connections between NSSI, suicide, and body image disturbances.  Recently her research has evolved to focus on suicide prevention program develop and evaluation.  She utilizes predominantly cross-sectional, survey-based methodologies but incorporate behavioral-based assessment and experimental designs into her work as well.  She is a consulting editor for the journal, Archives of Suicide Research and regularly contribute scholarly reviews for a variety of clinical journals.

In addition to Jennifer’s research expertise area, she has begun to develop a small, secondary line of research examining the potential effectiveness of different pedagogical techniques at the college level.  She is particularly interested in how different approaches that use active and student-centered techniques impact student engagement, motivation, and course mastery relative to traditional methods.
