Theory + Application

Through a mix of self-paced modules and in-person training, you'll apply behavior pattern identification, de-escalation techniques and data collection.

Example Curriculum

The content of the course is customized by you and depends on the needs of your district, but this example curriculum provides a starting point.

Self-Paced Courses

Each course is 30 minutes each and can be completed at your own pace.

Course 1: The Function Behind the Behavior 

Objective: Develop a foundational understanding of why behaviors occur, otherwise known as function-based thinking.

Topics:

  • Introduction to the ABCs of behavior (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence)
  • Common behavioral functions (e.g., escape, attention, sensory)
  • Connection to student needs and environments
Course 2: Proactive vs. Reactive Support Strategies

Objective: Learn how to shift from reactive responses to proactive planning.

Topics:

  • Defining proactive vs. reactive strategies
  • Embedding supports throughout the day
  • Role of consistency, structure and clear expectations
Course 3: Behavior Tracking & Data-Informed Decision Making

Objective: Gain skills in observing and tracking behavior to identify patterns and trends.

Topics:

  • Using point sheets and behavior logs effectively
  • Identifying frequency, intensity and duration patterns
  • Interpreting data to guide interventions
Course 4: Understanding Escalation & De-escalation

Objective: Review the CPI Crisis Development Model and connect it to daily practice.

Topics:

  • Analyzing patterns and trends
  • Connecting data to intervention strategies
  • Using data to guide team decision-making and student support planning

In-Person Application Trainings

These half-day sessions are designed for hands-on practice, peer collaboration and scenario-based learning. 

Training 1: Identifying Patterns & Root Causes

Activities:

  • Small group analysis of real-life student behavior scenarios 
  • Practicing how to complete ABC charts
  • Collaborative discussion on identifying behavior functions
Training 2: Designing Proactive Support Plans

Activities:

  • Building a daily support plan using proactive strategies
  • Role-playing how to implement structured transitions and routines
  • Reviewing and critiquing sample proactive interventions 
Training 3: Using Data Tools to Inform Practice

Activities:

  • Hands-on practice with point sheets, behavior tracking forms, and simple graphing
  • Team data review sessions to identify trends
  • Case study work: adjusting strategies based on data collected
Training 4: Practicing De-escalation Techniques

Activities:

  • Role-play responses across each stage of escalation (using CPI/DBT techniques)
  • Guided reflection on emotional triggers and self-regulation
  • Practicing calm voice, body posture, and space awareness
