The Infinite Library: Jessica Campbell

The Infinite Library : Jessica Campbell
Jessica Campbell is a cartoonist, visual artist and writer who is interested in how combining seemingly disparate media, subject matter and tone can be a tool for research and the production of knowledge. Her satirical drawings, comics and textiles expose everyday experiences that reveal the sexism women have faced throughout history, and presently. She primarily uses carpet to create figurative works that visually mimic latch hook rugs but deviate from this medium’s precedent in their subject matter, depiction style and scale.

Oliver Ressler: Catastrophe Bonds is a multi-site survey exhibition of the work of Austrian artist Oliver Ressler that focuses on forms of grassroots democracy, economic and political alternatives to the existing state of global affairs, activism around climate change, and issues relating to the European migration crisis. This exhibition is a partnership between the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and St. Norbert College.

Joshua Albers and Craig Clifford explore how contemporary visual culture is shaped by both manual and mechanical processes such as ceramics, and digital media. Their collaborative exhibition looks at ways of capturing and reproducing form through established techniques such as mold-making and casting as well as emerging methods such as scanning and 3D printing. In their work, Clifford and Albers take a single element, such as a pre-existing physical object or a computer-rendered geometric shape, and repeat, manipulate, and arrange it to construct new visual experiences that contrast historical modes of object making with contemporary approaches of industrial mass-production.

Davis is interested in the history of photography as it relates to both truth and also historical constructs. Dedecker creates imagery that revolves around framing the viewer as if they were a character within the image. He painted a special piece directly on the wall of the Lawton Gallery. Hunt is interested in themes involving color theory, contemporary culture, the history of abstraction and screen culture. He featured paintings, sculpture and video installations in the gallery. Hunt is originally from Green Bay and now lives in Milwaukee.

This exhibition by Brittanie Bondie was a photographic series of ten prints that make use of photography's root aspects, namely light and chemicals, by avoiding the use of the camera. Each print had a phase of the moon, developed and fixed onto light-sensitive canvases. Bondie's work exploits the medium's artifice to investigate culture and experience.

Curated by Dr. Stephen Perkins this exhibition explored a variety of themes and issues related to the place of the bed in our culture and our daily lives, with particular attention to how artists have used the image of the bed in their works. Made up of a series of different components this show included work by high school students, art students at UWGB and St. Norbert College, and an international mail art show on the theme. There were also hands-on and interactive components to this exhibition.

Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia

September 11 – October 2, 2014

Curated by Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins, PhD., this exhibition showcases a selection of Afghan war rugs created between the 1970s and early 2000s. Made mostly by women, these rugs reflect the larger history of Afghanistan and respond to both the Soviet and American – led invasions of the country. Dispensing with the long tradition of nonfigurative styles, these artists began creating pictorial rugs that incorporated references to the materiel of the occupying armies, subsequently reinvigorating this ancient art.

Andy Warhol: Photographs

October 10th - October 31st 2013

This exhibition features a selection of Polaroid and silver gelatin photographs that were part of a recent gift to the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. Many of the Polaroid photographs are preliminary studies for silkscreen portraits and the black and white works include both portraits and other miscellaneous subjects that caught Warhol's attention. Both sets of works attest to Warhol's busy social & professional life as well as a curiosity about the world that he obsessively explored through the medium of photography.

Guest curated by Nicholas Frank, in the late 1990s, a compelling mixture of forces brought national attention to Milwaukee's art scene. Milwaukeeists 1996-2006 presents work by artists active during this period, in painting, photography, performance, film, and video. Ephemera and documentary material reveals the social ties that bound these personalities together and propelled their work. The exhibition explores the rise of a scene and its lasting impact.

Post-Conceptual Glitter: A Mastery of Fine Arts Exhibition

March 7th - April 4th 2013

Guest curated by Scott Vanidestine this exhibition features the work of 26 artists in a variety of media, all of whom are either recent graduates, or current students in the MFA program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The "glitter" in the works of these post-conceptual artists is generated by the tension created through their simultaneous affirmation and critique of both modernism and conceptual art. Critical of the idea of an anti-aesthetic, they nevertheless allow the idea or concept to take precedence over traditional ways of making the materiality of objects.

How to Read a Book: An Artists' Book Reading Room

An interactive and hands-on exhibition of books by artists from North America and South America that offers an exciting introduction to the breadth and variety of the artists' book genre. Accompanying the exhibition is a small historical display of artists' books, as well as a selection of books made for the Veterans Book Project, a publishing project coordinated by artist Monica Haller who works collaboratively with veterans to create powerful books about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Take Care: Biomedical Ethics in the 21st Century

March 1st - March 29th 2012

This exhibit considers civilization's unease with modern family planning, maternal and fetal care, childbirth, and child rearing. For the first time in history, there is knowledge available to mothers which forces them to make life or death decisions whether to carry a disfigured, malformed, or unintentional fetus to term, whether to use pharmaceuticals with their associated risks, and whether to risk passing on genetic diseases. In these situations, we are no longer able to rely on long-established religious, societal, or medical expertise for guidance, and too often, we only grapple with such problems at the time of crisis. The show highlights these bioethical dilemmas, the hope that viewers will take the opportunity to better appreciate the complexity of these personal decisions in a rapidly changing world.

Chromatopia: New Works by Michael Velliquette

September 15th - October 6th 2011

Chromatopia presents a new body of work by mixed media artist Michael Velliquette that furthers his interest in the interaction of form and color. Velliquette's works are infused with aspects of tantric drawing, totems, sacred architecture, and votive statuary. Four distinct series make up this installation, including miniature gouache paintings, mixed media drawings, paper constructions, and plaster sculptures. Collectively the works are suggestive of relics or artifacts from a culture devoted to the worship of vivid hues and complex patterning.

This exhibition features a fascinating smorgasbord of artworks from collections in the Green Bay area, with the major portion of the works at the Lawton Gallery and a smaller selection of works at the Neville Public Museum. Some of the artists in the exhibition include: Andy Warhol, Peter Blake, Christo and Jean-Claude, Marcel Duchamp, Karel Appel, Gilbert & George, Robert Indiana, Robert Lostutter, Jacques Villon, and Grant Wood. This exhibition explores how the accordion fold has been used in the West within a variety of different printed matter contexts with a special emphasis on publications produced by artists from the 1960s onwards. Artists' use of the accordion format constitutes a significant, and largely unexamined genre within the history of printed matter works by artists, and this exhibition seeks to take the pulse of this singular publishing format.

Immigration Stories and the Staff of Life

March 5 - April 2, 2009

An installation that is connected to the artist's Armenian heritage and the genocide of his ancestors at the beginning of the 20th century in Turkey. More broadly the installation addresses issues that are fundamental to how we live our lives within the global community, as well as encouraging the viewer to reflect upon their own stories and experiences of movement and resettlement.

STASH

October 12th - November 2nd, 2006

Stash consists of ten hand-made objects whose forms mimic or draw influence from common outdoor urban elements observed in the Chicago landscape. These forms include: metal and concrete poles and other protectors that prevent cars from hitting the corners of buildings, sand bags, tree trunks, electrical and telephone utility boxes, flower planters, wooden boxes that cover unfinished electrical ground fixtures, large rocks that are placed in traffic islands and driveways as barriers or decorations, and mysterious remnants of once functional fixtures that remain in situ.

ReFresh Print Biennial II

Bedtime Stories: An Installation by Rebecca Pearson

An installation that utilizes textiles and beadwork to examine fairy tales and their relationship to childhood. Refracted through the prism of Jungian psychology and feminist theory, these works explore the tension between society’s idealization of childhood innocence and simultaneous sexualization of childhood.

Axis of Evil: The Secret History of Sin

September 15th - October 6th, 2005

A boisterous philatetic inquiry into the landscape of sin and its perpetrators. Featuring 127 artistamps by 47 artists from 11 countries, these works do not hold back from pointing the finger at those deemed responsible for creating this "axis of evil." This exhibition has been curated by Chicago-based artist Michael Hernandez de Luna.

Elohim: The Apocalyptic Time Machine. Works by Norbert H. Kox and William Thomas Thompson

February 24th - March 24th, 2005

Elohim is the Hebrew word we translate as “God” and “apocalypse” is the New Testament word for revelation. The concept of “Elohim: Apocalyptic Time Machine,” is very simple and at the same time quite complex. Elohim, God, exists in a limitless eternity, outside of our realm of measured time. According to Scripture he know and sees the end from the beginning. This what makes prophecy possible. He sees what has happened before we experience it. To him it has already taken place. All past, present, and future are recorded in the eternal archives of the omniscient Elohim. At times he chooses to allow certain people to glimpse into the future. This is prophetic revelation, and apocalypse of things to come, and actual view of God’s memory. Since he holds all the knowledge of past, present, and future, Elohim is a virtual time capsule, a time machine: Elohim the Apocalyptic Time Machine. Kox and Thompson feel that their paintings have been inspired and guided by the hand of Elohim, the Master of time and space, to allow others to see beyond the confines of the moment into the Eye of the Eternal.

Tradition and Change in Transylvania: Photographs by Kathleen McLaughlin

This exhibition features two series of photographs taken in Transylvania, Romania. One concentrates on peasant life in a small rural village and the other focuses on people within the contemporary urban landscape. Both series of works are animated by the extraordinary changes that have taken place in Romanian society since the demise of the Soviet Bloc.

ReFresh Biennial I

A national print invitational showcasing contemporary currents in print (printmaking, photography & digital). Guest curated by Christine Style, Professor of Communication Arts/Art (UWGB). ReFresh Print Biennial I is a new initiative, and a national touring exhibition. The beginning of a new millennium offers us an opportune moment to take a fresh look at the range of contemporary currents in print. The works selected for this exhibition span the range of traditional printmaking and photography, as well as works that reflect artists' incorporation of digital media into their print practices.

Click: Midwest Print Invitational: Digital Focus

February 28th - March 29th, 2002

This print invitational will feature over fifty works by forty-three artists, all of whom incorporate digital technology into the conceptual or production process of their prints. Drawn from seven Midwestern states (IL, IN, IA, MI, MN, OH, and WI) the works in this exhibition promise to be an exciting introduction to the merging of the traditional print medium and the new possibilities offered by the digital environment.

At the Boundary: Works by Karen Winzenz

January 31st - February 21st, 2002

Featuring twenty-eight works from the years 1979-94 this exhibition was a mini-retrospective of Winzenz’s painted sculptural works. Influenced by “the ritual art and architecture of prehistoric, tribal and non-Western cultures.” Karon Winzenz is an Emerita Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Winzenz has been active as a professional artist and teacher for over 25 years. She received her B.A. from Lawrence University, her M.S. in Art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has an extensive exhibiting history that includes many one-person and groups exhibitions. She has been awarded a number of corporate and public commissions and her work can be found in over sixty private, public and corporate collections across the country.

AIDS Memorial Quilt

October 17th - November 9th, 2001

An exhibition that featured five sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, coupled with various activities organized in conjunction with the Quilt. Arguably the world’s largest community arts project, the Quilt is dedicated to bringing an end to AIDS. Its goals are:

Provide a creative means for remembrance and healing;
Illustrate the enormity of the AIDS epidemic;
Increase public awareness of AIDS;
Assist with HIV prevention;
Raise funds for community-based AIDS service organizations.

The White Flag of Surrender: An Installation by David Dunlap & Travis Freeman

September 13th – October 10th, 2001

David Dunlap and Travis Freeman presented a misinformed version of a teahouse in which a conversation about surrender takes place. Dunlap and Freeman attempted the impossible task of sharing a powerful and personal conversation. Under a white flag of surrender, within an orange teahouse, the conversation took the form of drawings, paintings, found objects, photographs, suits of clothing and books. Imagine a conversation between two people. Imagine that this conversation is so honest that each participant glimpses the other's soul. Imagine that each of these souls is so beautiful that the two conversationist's lives are forever changed. Imagine these two people wanted to share their experience and to that end built a teahouse. Imagine this teahouse a cross section cut from a conversation between a fool and a wonderer who found magic, love, spirit and delight simply by deciding not to lie.

Babel, Wisconsin: Printed Matter from Xeoxoxial Edition

This exhibition features over one hundred of the photocopy books and periodicals published by the Wisconsin-based Xexoxial Editions over the last two decades. The artists/publishers, Miekal And and Lyx Ish, will also be collaborating with their son, Liaizon Wakest, in creating a site-specific photocopy installation in the gallery.
