Assessment

Through student learning assessments at UW-Green Bay, we seek to ensure that we honor our mission to teach all who wish to learn by continuously improving the student learning experience. Through evidence-based evaluation of learning outcomes, both inside and outside the classroom, we support informed curricular decisions and maintain accreditation standards across programs.

Focus Areas

The University Plan for the Continuous Assessment of Student Learning focuses assessment efforts on four specific areas at UW–Green Bay:

  1. Academic Programs: Assessment of program-specific student learning outcomes, with an eye toward continual curricular improvement, will be conducted as part of each undergraduate and graduate program’s annual review cycle.
  2. General Education: Systematic inquiry into student learning will take place within the context of the general education curriculum, in order to ensure that this common educational experience continues to effectively address our institution’s select mission and maintain alignment with The Universities of Wisconsin standard requirements.
  3. Co-curricular Programs & Resources: Regular assessment of academic and student support services with stated learning outcomes will take place in order to identify the most effective approaches to supporting student learning on our campus.
  4. Innovations in Teaching and Learning: UW-Green Bay has a history and national reputation for innovative pedagogical approaches, and thus it is fitting that our institution’s assessment plan documents the impact of these unique innovations on students’ educational experience.

Assessment practices for all focus areas are based on a five-component assessment cycle with the continuous goal of improving measurable outcomes. These components of the assessment cycle include:

  • Identifying outcomes
  • Establishing methodologies to assess the achievement of outcomes
  • Gathering and analyzing the evidence with the methodologies
  • Sharing the results of the analysis, and
  • Making evidence-based improvements as needed

University Assessment Committee

The University Assessment Committee (UAC) serves to support and monitor the activities related to the assessment of general education, undergraduate major and graduate programs, connecting assessments to curricular/program review and development. The UAC coordinates resources to support assessment plans and also supports and provides guidance to student affairs and other supports areas related to assessment activities.

The UAC members include representatives from offices supporting student success and faculty development, institutional research and faculty members from across the university.
