Essential Job Functions

This position reports to the Network Technician III and completes routine planning, installation, maintenance, and recovery efforts of network cabling, hardware, and associated equipment to maintain data and telecommunication technologies. This position is focused on physical infrastructure that includes but is not limited to copper and fiber cabling, IP security cameras, door access hardware, networked printers, data switches, and UPS systems.

What You'll Do

  • Installs, configures, maintains, replaces, and monitors routine network cabling, hardware (including network, door-lock and camera) and system security components.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots routine network cabling, hardware issues, user requests, and reports utilizing established diagnostic resources under direct supervision.
  • Schedules logistics and secures resources for work order responses and specified institutional networking projects and updates to ensure adherence to timelines and quality expectations.
  • Writes, reviews, and updates network installation documentation to meet specific operational requests.
  • Communicates and coordinates with customers on planned installation or emergency recovery activities.
  • Provides technical support for network fiber circuits.
  • Reports and documents network fiber, usage, and/or signal conduit routes.
  • Reviews and provides network maintenance enhancements.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree in IT related field or equivalent experience
  • Ability to manage time and materials for projects
  • Good work habits, such as attendance, punctuality, accountability, thoroughness and resourcefulness
  • Working knowledge of network topologies, technologies, and protocols

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of desktop hardware and standard business software programs (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, database) and the Internet
  • Knowledge and experience with voice/data network wiring standards, specifications and techniques for both copper and fiber.
  • Experience in an educational environment
  • Experience with unified communications call management and voicemail applications
  • Awareness of ITIL and Agile methodologies

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee must have the physical ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, reach, crawl, kneel, and move with a full range of motion for extended periods of time. Must be able to work on ladders and personnel lifts at various heights and be able to lift up to 75 Ibs. The employee must also have the mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, hearing and speech to converse in person and over the telephone and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.

Conditions of Appointment

Position is a full-time University Staff appointment. The work hours for this position will be 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Position may require some travel, as well as occasional evening and weekend work as assigned by the supervisor.

A criminal conviction investigation and pre-work screen examination will be conducted on the finalist(s).  A six-month probationary period is required for this position. Compensation and Benefits

SALARY INFORMATION

Hourly salary range of $28.85.

This position will earn an additional $0.80 per hour for all weekend hours worked, as well as for all hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This position is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).


BENEFIT DETAILS

The UW System provides an excellent benefits package to meet the diverse needs of its employees. This includes several health insurance options, with annual deductibles as low as $250/individual and $500/family. Our benefits package also includes dental, vision, several life insurance options, AD&D and Accident insurance and Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts. We participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), where employer contributions begin immediately and employees are fully vested after 5 years of service. The UW System also provides supplemental retirement savings programs including a 403(b) and Deferred Compensation.

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%. This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually. Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
