In today's interconnected world, teaching English as a second language is highly sought after in both public and private sectors. We offer TESL programs including a TESL minor, a TESL certificate and TESL public school certification. Our programs cover second language acquisition and assessment, sociolinguistics, cultural difference, teaching methodology and hands-on second language teaching experience. You'll have the opportunity to gain essential skills and practical experience through internships at Literacy Green Bay, the Learning Center and other local organizations.
Three Programs
There are three different options that emphasize teaching English as a second language (TESL) at UW-Green Bay. Meet with a TESL advisor to determine your specific career objectives and which track will be the best fit for you.
TESL/Linguistics Humanities Minor
The 24-credit humanities minor emphasis is designed for students who want to explore key linguistic, cultural and pedagogical themes in greater depth. You'll study language on a cultural level, delving into language teaching methodology, language and society, identity and language diversity, and be able to teach in non-public school settings.
TESL Certificate
This 18-credit certificate is designed for students who want to teach English outside public schools in the US, overseas or in adult literacy programs sponsored by community service organizations. To be eligible, you need to be working toward a bachelor's degree or have already completed one.
TESL Public School Certification
If your ultimate goal is to teach English as a second language in Wisconsin K-12 public schools, you'll need to be admitted into the Education program and declare in emphasis in English as a second language. Learn more about the requirements by exploring the Education major.

Teach English Abroad
If you want to teach English as a second language outside public schools in the U.S., another country or another agency in the U.S., you'll need to obtain:
- A TESL certificate, or
- Minor in Humanities with Linguistics/TESL
Graduate TESL Emphasis
In the graduate program for applied leadership for teaching and learning, you can earn an emphasis in TESL. This degree propels your career and can be completed within one calendar year.
