Course Description

Within the NASW and ACA Code of Ethics we are informed of our responsibility to consider the impact of clients’ and our personal values and cultural and religious beliefs and practices when making ethical decisions. This workshop will apply ethical principles toward utilization of best practices in the promotion of spiritually sensitive practice. Participants will gain understanding of various cultural dimensions of spirituality and apply learning to a range of situations in the realm of ethics and boundaries.

At the conlusion of this presentation, participants will have

  • Understand the ethical challenges of addressing spirituality in the helping context
  • Become familiar with evidence-based practices that addresses spirituality
  • Increase awareness of one's own religious or spiritual agenda
  • Demonstrate understanding of the importance of cultural competency regarding spirituality in practice
  • Practice applying the Code of Ethics and ethical principles to possible dilemmas and challenges

Sherry Warren
Dr. Sherry Warren (she/her), MSW, PhD

Dr. Sherry Warren (she/her), MSW, PhD, is the Minister for Women’s and Gender Justice for the United Church of Christ National Ministries. She earned her MSW in clinical mental health and her PhD at the University of Kansas, conducting research on spirituality under the mentorship of Dr. Edward Canda. She has served as faculty at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa and at UW Green Bay. Sherry currently lives in Akron, Ohio and continues to adjunct for UW Green Bay Social Work Professional Programs. You may have met her at a training for Us2 Behavioral Healthcare, based in Appleton, or at one of the many continuing education events in Wisconsin.
