Competitive Sports Graduate Assistant

Overview:

The Competitive Sports Graduate Assistant position within University Recreation (UREC) at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay offers graduate students an opportunity to contribute to campus wellness while gaining hands-on experience in intramurals and sport clubs. Reporting to the Recreation Program Manager, the Competitive Sports Graduate Assistant will work collaboratively to oversee intramural and sport club operations, supervise student staff, and develop innovative programming that engage the university community.

Term:

This position is a two-year term starting August 2026.

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervision and Staff Management:
    • Provide leadership and guidance to intramural supervisors, officials and score keepers, ensuring alignment with UREC's mission and goals.
    • Collaborate with the Recreation Program Coordinator to conduct staff recruitment, training, officials’ clinics performance evaluations, and ongoing professional development opportunities for student staff members.
    • Act as primary scheduler of intramural officials. 
    • Will provide supervisory oversite to Kress Events Center operations two evenings per week during the academic year.
    • Foster a supportive and inclusive work environment that encourages teamwork, accountability, and personal growth among student staff.
  1. Program Development and Implementation:
    • Work closely with the Recreation Program Coordinator to develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive intramural programs and events that meet the diverse needs and interests of the campus community.
    • Assist in league and tournament scheduling, management and implantation of all sport rules and program policies.
    • Assist in building a stronger Club Sports presence on campus.
    • Assist in marketing and promoting intramural programs, sport club activities and special events to increase student participation and engagement.
    • Stay informed about current intramural and sport club trends, industry best practices, and evidence-based programming to enhance the quality and effectiveness of UREC's competitive sport offerings.
  1. Competitive Sports Operations:
    • Collaborate with the Recreation Program Coordinator to oversee the daily competitive sport operations including equipment maintenance, facility cleanliness, and safety / risk management protocols.
    • Assist with scheduling and supervision of intramural program staff to ensure proper sport activity/event coverage.
    • Address patron/participant concerns or issues promptly and professionally, maintaining a positive and welcoming environment for all users.
  1. Event Coordination and Outreach:
    • Work collaboratively with other UREC team members, campus partners and student organizations to plan and execute recreational and intramural events as well as outreach initiatives.
    • Represent UREC at campus-wide events and engage with the university community to promote competitive sports programs, services, and resources.
  1. Administrative Support:
    • Assist the Recreation Program Coordinator in maintaining accurate records of program participation, staff schedules, and equipment inventory.
    • Assist in program evaluation that includes support of data collection, assessment, and evaluation efforts to measure program effectiveness and inform decision-making.
    • Remain flexible and open to taking on additional tasks or projects as directed by UREC leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Acceptance into a UW-Green Bay graduate program
  • Hold a current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire
  • Hold a current driver’s license (or have the ability to obtain one) and hold a clean driving record for the past 2 years
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and student staff
  • Available to work evenings and some weekend hours
  • High organization and communications skills
  • Professional commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all students to participate in.
  • Resiliency and ability to respond quickly and efficiently to stressful situations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a university recreation program
  • Experience in staff supervision
  • Experience in intramural programming, sport clubs, athletics, recreation special events or related
  • Knowledge of IM Leagues, EMS, Fusion
  • Sport officiating experience / certification(s)
