There's an entire world to see and experience. By studying abroad, you'll discover both the connected attitudes toward creativity across cultures as well as different perspectives that open your eyes to more. Studying abroad in places like London, Rome, Tokyo or Dublin gives you more access to well-known museums and more artistic understandings. We also have two short-term travel courses in New York City and Florence, Italy to help expand your artistic education, inspiration and creation, and are open to other opportunities as they are available!
The Center of The art World
Study art and start your adventure in New York City.
In our New York class, you'll be accompanied by a professor and spend two weeks in this global center for art and culture. During your time in the city, you'll visit major art museums and galleries, go to a Broadway play, see musical concerts, visit artist studios, talk with practicing artists in the city and much more.
Live, Learn, Create.
Right in the heart of Tuscany.
The Florence, Italy travel course is your opportunity to live in the center of the city and create art using the studios at the Santa Raparata International School of Art (SRISA). You’ll see magnificent frescoes, outstanding medieval and renaissance architecture, paintings and sculpture by Italian masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Fra Angelico and fabulous contemporary fashion and design. More than earning credit, this experience develops artistic inspiration, personal growth and your creative process.
Prepare for Take Off
In addition to the adventurous side of exploring Tuscany, your experience in Florence is practical, too: you’ll live in a furnished apartment within walking distance to SRISA and earn six credits in art, three credits with your traveling faculty, three with SRISA. Art making is the primary focus of this course as you combine drawing, painting, photography and printmaking into a series of work. Your subjects might be the Tuscan countryside, the narrow passageways of Sienna, the people and culture, the many stunning churches, markets and plazas, or the enchanting Boboli Gardens.
While Florence will be your home base, you’ll have a couple days exploring Venice. You’ll also explore other cities like Sienna, San Gimignano, Porto Venere and Pisa for day trips. Your professors will teach you skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and artist books and assist you in developing a personal direction of art making while in Italy. Individual and group sessions will strive to improve your technical and creative skill.
Living
You’ll stay in conveniently located two- and three-bedroom apartments with shared kitchens and living areas.
Eligibility & Language Requirements
Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience as an artist, you’re able to take this course.
- There is no foreign language or prerequisite course requirement for lower level (299) courses.
- Upper-level credit (499) requires Art 270, Art 302, ART 343, Art 210, or consent of instructor.
- This program is open to UW-Green Bay students, non-UW-Green Bay students, staff, faculty and community members interested in making art in Italy.
Cost
You’ll pay a flat rate that includes air travel from Green Bay to Florence and return, apartment accommodations, a modest food allowance, transportation to Venice, Pisa and Orvieto, select museum admissions, some art supplies, instructional costs for six credits and mandatory UW-System health/travel insurance. Plan for extra expenses to cover personal exploration, souvenirs and miscellaneous expenses. Total cost, based on airfare and transportation costs, is subject to change if enrollment does not meet the 10-student minimum.
Note: UW-Green Bay pays travel expenses in the currencies of the countries in which students study. Fluctuations in the value of the U.S. dollar may impact the final program cost. Due to fluctuations in exchange rates and airline prices, the Office of International Education reserves the right to cancel, surcharge or alter the itinerary of the program.
There is a $100 surcharge for nonresidents of the State of Wisconsin.
