Professor John Luczaj Receives Three-Year NSF Grant to Study Dolomite in China

Professor John Luczaj (Water Science) and colleague Dan Lehrman (Trinity University) received parallel three-year grants from the National Science Foundation to study the carbonate rocks of southern China. The NSF Grants will involve taking students to China for one month each year, followed by laboratory work at UW-Green Bay. The UW-Green Bay portion part of the award is $163,905.

Construction of a Coastal Wetland

Amy Wolf was awarded $60,000 from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation for the "Construction of a Coastal Wetland".

UW Sea Grant

Assistant Research Scientist Chris Houghton was awarded $160,000 by UW Sea Grant for a two year research project beginning in 2019.  The project will map the benthic invertebrate community of Green Bay to compare the current community with historical records.  It will also assess the effect of seasonal hypoxia on benthic invertebrates.  The grant includes funding for a new Master’s degree student in Public and Environmental Affairs, undergraduate research technicians, and will extend collaborations with researchers from Texas A&M and UW-Milwaukee. 
 

UWGB Facilitating Adaptive Management Phragmites

Robert Howe was awarded $118,014 from the WI Department of Natural Resources for "UWGB Facilitating Adaptive Management Phragmites".

Lower Green Bay Habitat Enhancement Project

Mathew Dornbush was awarded $87,620 from the US Fish & Wildlife Service for the "Lower Green Bay Habitat Enhancement Project US WI 392-2".

Fish Fertilizer Comparison

Ryan Holzem was awarded $14,201 from the DRAMM Corporation for "Phase I: Characterization of liquid fish fertilizer produced by DRAMM Corporation, and comparison with competitors."

River & Reef Spawned Lake Whitefish

Patrick Forsythe was awarded $54,453 from the US Fish & Wildlife Service and $30,000 from the WI Department of Natural Resources for "Proportional Contribution of River & Reef Spawned Lake Whitefish".  

Lower Fox River and Green Bay Natural Resource Damage Assessment Program

Patrick Forsythe was awarded $247,260 from the US Fish & Wildlife Service for the assessment of water quality, habitat availability, and fish communities in lower order tributaries of Green Bay, WI.

Lower Fox River and Green Bay Natural Resource Damage Assessment Program

Patrick Forsythe was awarded $304,015 from the US Fish & Wildlife Service for the evaluation of the lower Fox River Area of Concern and west shore tributaries for lake sturgeon and lake whitefish larval production, and survey of benthic habitats supporting spawning, larval drift, and juvenile behavior.

Lower Fox Perennial Forage Project

John Arendt and Kevin Fermanich were awarded $18,965 for the "Lower Fox Perennial Forage Project" sponsored by the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

Improving Water Quality

John Arendt and Kevin Fermanich were awarded $36,640 for "Improving Water Quality through Sustained Stakeholder Engagement and Collaborative Watershed Projects to Reduce Nutrients in the Lower Fox River and Green Bay Watershed" sponsored by the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

Determination of the Optimal Coagulant & Polymer

Ryan Holzem was awarded $2,420 by NEW Water for "Determination of the optimal coagulant and polymer doses for chemical phosphorus removal in the plant effluent at the NEW Water Green Bay Facility".

NAS Research & Equipment

Patrick Forsythe was awarded $23,000 from the Cofrin funds for the purchase of a boat, motor and trailer to allow for the expansion of the fisheries research in the College of Science and Technology.

100,000 Strong in the Americas Grant

John Katers and Mike Zorn were one of only eight higher education institutions recognized with a "100,000 Strong in the Americas" Innovation Fund Award and $25,000 in grant funding to study water issues in Chile along with 12 UWGB students.  This travel course took place in August, 2017.  See the full press release here.

Supermarket Tour Training Grant

Dietetics was one of five nutrition programs nationwide selected to receive a supermarket tour training grant from the Produce for Better Health Foundation which will allow up to 8 upper level nutrition students the opportunity to receive training and mentorship from a grocery store dietitian.  Students will then conduct their own grocery store tours, educating community members on the benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables and practical strategies to include more fruits and vegetables in the diet.

Linking Soil Health Assessment to Edge of Field Water Quality in the Great Lakes Basin Grant

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will take the lead on a $508,000 grant for one of the first large-scale attempts to directly link in-field soil health parameters with intensive edge-of-field water quality monitoring across the Great Lakes Basin. The results of this work will provide direct management recommendations for improving the health and quality of the Great Lakes.  UW-Green Bay Professor Kevin Fermanich (Natural and Applied Sciences) and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Mathew Dornbush (Natural and Applied Sciences) will lead the project as part of the Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Units (CESU) Network.  See the full press release here.
