French & Francophone Studies

Around the World

French is much more than France.

French is one of two languages spoken across 5 continents. In addition to English, it's the official language of NATO and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. As of 2024, France is the seventh largest economy in the world and the third largest in Europe. According to the most recent U.S. Census, 1.9 million Americans speak French in the home. French is much more than France; it can help you connect with people and cultures around the world, from Canada to Haiti to Algeria to Cameroon to Switzerland.

Gain Cultural Insight

A minor in French is a way to develop personal as well as professional growth.

Knowing another language and culture enhances your career opportunities—many of our graduates have developed successful careers in many areas of business, service professions and the government. But it does more than provide career opportunities—according to a study by the Academy of Finland, bilingual people demonstrated greater ease in learning and complex thinking, creativity, mental flexibility, interpersonal and communication skills, and even a delay in the onset of age-related mental decline. You’ll constantly use the creative part of your brain and practice skills that can open your mind.
