Dr. Akakpo has a diverse teaching background that spans undergraduate courses in public relations and business ethics, as well as graduate-level social work courses. He has taught in a variety of academic settings, including small, private universities and large, public institutions. His expertise covers a broad range of educational topics, particularly in public and social welfare policy and social work practice.

Professionally, Dr. Akakpo has focused on work with children, youth, and families. He spent over eleven years with the Michigan Department of Human Services, where he contributed to child welfare programs and the Bureau of Juvenile Justice. His work is driven by a deep commitment to helping young people who have come into conflict with the law, and he is passionate about making a positive impact in their lives.

His areas of professional practice include clinical social work, mental health, treatment of adolescent sexual offenders, and addressing issues relevant to African immigrant communities. His scholarly interests are equally broad and include at-risk families and juvenile delinquency, the reintegration of juveniles from residential facilities into the community, and the evaluation of nonsexual offenses committed by juvenile sexual offenders. He also explores topics such as child abuse and neglect, international social work, child labor and human trafficking, issues of privilege and oppression, and the role of non-governmental organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa.
