Regional Placement Testing

We are pleased that you have chosen one of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campuses as you embark on your journey toward a college education. The following information explains the Wisconsin Regional Placement Testing Program. The tests are required as part of your enrollment and registration process.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to campus responses to the COVID-19 (coronavirus), UW-Green Bay is no longer requiring Placement Testing for Fall 2020 first-year students.  If your test session has already been canceled, you do not need to reschedule.  If your test session has not yet been canceled, you can go into your email registration confirmation and cancel it.  UW-Green Bay is exploring other methods for Math Placement (using ACT Math or SAT Math scores) and is not requiring any further action on your part at this time.

What are they?
Placement Tests are used to place you into the appropriate level Math or World Language course. The Math Placement Test is required. UW-Green Bay does not use the English Placement Test as we use the ACT English or SAT Reading score for placement purposes. The World Language Placement Test is recommended if you plan to enroll in a French, German, or Spanish course. It is important that you do well on the tests otherwise you will be placed into a remedial level course.

What if I've taken AP courses?
Since the AP scores are not available until July and registration is prior, you should most definitely plan to take the Math Placement Test. There is always the chance that you may not pass the AP exam either.

What if I've taken college level math courses?
If you have taken college level math courses while in high school (eg..CAPP, CCIHS) and you know how these will transfer in and are satisfied with that placement, you do not need to take the Math Placement Test. Once we receive your college transcripts and award the credit, your math competency level will be updated.

Where do I take the tests?
You can take the tests at ANY of the test sites listed online. You do not need to take them at the UW-school which you plan to attend. Plan to take them at the site closest to your home! Testing is offered in the spring on select weekends throughout the state. It is advised to test early.

How do I sign up? (Do NOT sign up!  Testing is no longer required due to COVID-19)

Two options for testing:
1. Paper/Pencil testing which requires no additional cost,
2. Computer-Based testing with a non-refundable fee of $80 - $90 which includes proctoring fees. Out-of-state students may test at any site or choose to take the test Computer-Based and select a testing location closest to their home through the Scantron (formerly Castle World Wide) Testing Network.

The UW-Green Bay campuses will offer the 2020 Regional Placement Testing on the following dates:  (As of 3-17-2020, Regional Placement Testing has been suspended)
UW-Green Bay, Green Bay campus:
UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc campus:
UW-Green Bay, Marinette campus:
UW-Green Bay, Sheboygan campus:

If you require Special Accommodations (do not sign up online):

If you require special testing accommodations due to a disability, send a letter on your high school letterhead from a teacher, counselor or principal who will describe what accommodations are appropriate for you.  Please also include your address, telephone number, email address, date of birth, which site you wish to test at, as well as what campus you plan to attend in the fall. Send this information to Tim O'Connor, 1025 West Johnson Street, Madison, WI 53706 or via email at Do not register online if you are requesting a non-standard accommodation due to a disability.

Can I use a calculator?
You may use a non-graphing calculator. Graphing calculators, or calculators which are part of an electronic device will not be permitted. Calculators cannot be shared and will not be provided if you forget yours.

Photo identification Required!
The University of Wisconsin requires students to show a government-issued photo identification document such as driver’s license, state-issued ID or passport when they arrive to take placement tests.  Students will not be allowed to test without providing an appropriate photo ID.

When will I receive my test results?
Students are notified of their results and placement level when they come to GB Orientation in June.  If a student places into remedial Math (Math 094 or Math 099) and they are a STEM/Nursing major, they will be invited to participate in our great program, Phoenix Phlash Phorward:
