Course Description

This one-day ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition training will provide a comprehensive overview of the major updates in the Fourth Edition. We will cover new assessment and treatment planning standards, updates to the continuum of care, and Dimensional Admission Criteria and Level-of-Care Determination Rules. This training also includes hands-on practice applying the new criteria to patient case scenarios. This approach will guide practitioners in making objective decisions about level of care recommendations, and treatment planning for patients with substance use and co-occurring disorders. This is a highly interactive, virtual, one-day training with breakout sessions, group discussion, polls, games, and more. The training day is 8 hours with two 15-minute breaks and thirty minutes for a lunch break. 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Define updates from the ASAM Criteria Third Edition to the Fourth Edition and their potential impact on clinical care quality, ease of workflow, and approval rates. 
  • Recognize opportunities to evolve standards and practices in alignment with Fourth Edition Criteria 
  • Practice applying Fourth Edition Criteria to highlight benefits of the recent updates. 
  • Analyze the ASAM Criteria Fourth Edition’s Continuum of care and how these updated criteria apply to person-centered, culturally humble, and trauma responsive care. 
  • Develop a framework for understanding assessments that guide a patients journey through the continuum of care using the ASAM Criteria Fourth Edition. 
  • Apply the ASAM Criteria Fourth Edition to diverse patient case studies by conducting level of care assessments and making a level of care recommendations.

Don Bartosik, MS, LMFT, ASAM Manager and Trainer and Consultant for the Consulting and Training Team at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation

Don Bartosik is an outcomes-driven leader with over 25 years of experience developing community-based healthcare programs, utilizing implementation science, building trusting relationships at all organizational levels, and improving access to care for underserved communities. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and has provided clinical guidance, interdisciplinary administrative leadership, and targeted training and consultation across the country for evidence-based and emerging practices in behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment.  Don's primary areas of interest are trauma-informed care, integrated care, model implementation, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.  His well-rounded expertise includes operations, performance improvement, quality assurance, and change management. Don is a proud husband, father of 3, and rescue dog enthusiast living in Durham, NC.

Diana Kelly is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) clinician, educator, and Clinical Director at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the IU School of Social Work in Indianapolis Indiana. Diana’s primary focus areas include inclusive group work, trauma informed and anti-oppressive clinical practices, and clinical work with Military Veterans and their families. Diana’s direct practice experience involves work with Military Veterans, and those involved with the Justice System. Diana has a strong passion for trauma informed work with Women Veterans and advocating for the inclusive treatment of minority Veterans.  Diana has a strong passion for teaching, mentoring, group facilitation and has a strong belief in the magic of group work! She is a graduate of the IU School of Social Work in Indianapolis Indiana.
