Course Description

Substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions (also known as co-occurring disorders) are very common and can significantly impact the effectiveness of crisis intervention. ​In addition to learning commonly used screening tools and how they apply to ASAM levels and the stages of change, you'll engage in practice unconditional hope and care coordination. You are required to apply your learning through interactive games, case scenarios and quizzes to develop your knowledge, skills and abilities as it relates to substance use.

Learning Objectives:

  • Broadly define substances, substance use, withdrawal, and the ASAM levels of care.
  • Explain unconditional positive regard and distinguish what unconditional positive regard is not.
  • Demonstrate knowledge on the stages of change.
  • Demonstrate on understanding of medication assisted treatment.

About the Trainer

 Joanne Tulachka, MA, LPC, CSAC

Joanne Tulachka, MA, LPC, CSAC

Joanne Tulachka joined the Behavioral Health Training Partnership (BHTP) in November 2018 as the Training Coordinator.  She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from UW-Stevens Point and a master's degree in Community Counseling from Lakeland University.  Joanne is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor in the state of Wisconsin.

Before joining BHTP, Joanne spent 18 years working in county human services as a Mental Health and Substance Use Counselor.  She also served as a Crisis Coordinator, providing direct crisis intervention and collaborating closely with the court system under Chapter 51.  Additionally, she is a trained IDP assessor, qualified to conduct court-ordered assessments for individuals convicted of operating while intoxicated.
