Course Description

Addressing mental health and suicide prevention are part of the next dimension in building a best-in-class safety culture. The construction industry has a suicide rate 4x the national average for working-age adults, and 5x as many construction workers die by suicide each year than die by jobsite fatalities. This session will address the factors that put the construction workforce at a heightened risk of suicide and educate leaders on ways to build in practical protective factors to help minimize these risks. It will demonstrate the many benefits of building a caring culture where employees feel safe to ask for help for themselves or their co-workers, as well as equip participants with information on warning signs that someone may be struggling or at risk of suicide, and ways to start a productive conversation and offer help.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the statistics around construction suicide
  • Learn the risk factors associated with construction
  • Learn the warning signs and how to recognize them
  • Learn how to have a conversation around mental health and suicide prevention
  • Learn the resources

About the Trainer

Sonya Bohmann

Sonya Bohmann

I am the Executive Director of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention. I am also a loss survivor, having lost my sister to suicide 17 years ago. My previous work experience is in the construction field. This gives me a unique perspective to this topic as I can bring the construction experience, the loss survivor perspective and the leadership and training that I have gained from being involved in several suicide prevention organizations over the years.
