Course Description

LGBTQIA+ individuals experience disproportionately higher rates of suicide due to stigma, discrimination, and barriers to affirming care. This training provides an in-depth look at the unique risk and protective factors impacting LGBTQIA+ mental health and suicide prevention. Participants will gain tools for recognizing warning signs, engaging in affirming and effective crisis intervention, and fostering inclusive environments that promote resilience and well-being. This session is designed for mental health professionals, educators, and community members committed to suicide prevention in LGBTQIA+ populations.

Learning Objectives: 

  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to identify key risk and protective factors influencing suicide rates among LGBTQIA+ individuals.
  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to apply affirming language and interventions when engaging in suicide prevention and crisis response.
  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to develop strategies to create inclusive and supportive environments that enhance protective factors for the
    well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

About the Trainer

Leah Post, LICSW

I am a LICSW and own my own small private practice that focuses on supporting LGBTQIA+ teens and adults in WA State. I have my MSW and MPH from the University of Minnesota. Prior to starting graduate school, I spent ten years working in Minneapolis and St. Paul schools supporting the sexual health and wellness of individuals, teens, families, groups and educating providers. I am also a WA State approved clinical supervisor and have been providing trainings for many years on various mental health and public health topics.
