Teaching

Green Bay Public Schools

Eisenhower Elementary School

"Interning at Eisenhower Elementary School showed me how eager children are to learn, and how they can be so easily influenced by others, including their "role models". I never thought I could be a good teacher, or that I would ever want to be a teacher; however, after having this internship, I recognized how rewarding it is. I would make a difference in so many children's lives, and they would look up to me...I really enjoyed interning at Eisenhower. I was exposed to a lot of children from different cultures, and I learned so much from all of them. They all come from different backgrounds, and it was a great experience getting to know each and every one of them...their eyes would light up every time they saw me, which proved how much of a difference and an impact I had made on their lives."
- Cassandra Baehler, Eisenhower Elementary internship, Dec. 2010

This internship, which coordinates with the YMCA teaching program, is also designed to give our students an opportunity to gain experience teaching lower level grammar school students at different elementary levels as teaching interns. Interns will be functioning mostly as remedial teachers, helping all students with any subject matter they need assistance with. While they do have full responsibility for designing their remedial lesson plans for the students, they work with a teacher in the classroom. They regular teacher serves both as a model and mentor to our students and is available for discussion of performance and to write references, if requested. These interns also meet bi-weekly with me for assistance with their teaching and to practice them in thinking critically about their results and about what and how they are presenting the material and meeting individual challenges in the classroom. Interns do not need to be enrolled in the Education program.

Langlade Elementary School

This internship is designed to give our students an opportunity to gain experience teaching lower level grammar school students (second graders) as teaching interns. Interns teach the rudiments of language arts and basic math, but also accompany pupils on the playground and may be involved with designing games or other activities during recess. While they do have full responsibility for designing their remedial lesson plans for the students, they work with a teacher in the classroom. They regular teacher serves both as a model and mentor to our students and is available for discussion of performance and to write references, if requested. Students meet bi-weekly with me for assistance with their teaching and to practice them in thinking critically about their results and about what and how they are presenting the material and meeting individual challenges in the classroom. These teaching interns do not need to be enrolled in the Education program.

Foreign Language Teaching Internships

These internships are designed for students with proficiency in French, German or Spanish, who are interested in teaching one of these languages to children in grades K-5 at local elementary and middle schools. A great way to put your foreign language skills to use while acquiring teaching skills and making a lasting difference in children's lives!

German Teaching Internship

Students interested in teaching German, who may or may not also be planning on entering the teaching profession after graduation, will learn about different approaches to foreign language teaching while gaining valuable practical experience in the classroom. Although interns are not given monetary compensation for this learning experience, they often comment on how the program allowed them the opportunity to put their knowledge of German to good use and gave them a chance to make a difference in the community by enriching the education of local school children.

ESL Teaching Internship

Literacy Council of Brown County

424 S. Monroe Ave.

Students in this internship will gain experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to members of our community. Interns may serve either in an observing capacity, as a tutor, as an assistant to more experienced teachers or as a classroom teacher. Most interns will be assigned a small class (usually 3-8 students) of typically adult learners to instruct in the English language. Most classes take place at the Literacy Council in Green Bay, others take place at off-site locations within the Green Bay community.

Many interns will participate in an orientation/workshop program at the Literacy Council for the first two weeks before they begin teaching (unless already certified or already in possession of extensive ESL teaching experience) and will need to designate some additional time for class preparation as well.

The ESL Teaching internship is offered every semester (including summer) and can be repeated for credit, so you can graduate with up to four years of teaching experience if you take the internship every semester. You can register for the internship anytime up until the course add period deadline at the beginning of every semester.
