Baird Creek Preservation Foundation: Environmental Education Internship

We have openings for two summer interns over the summer of 2022.  Opportunities exist for students to gain hands-on experience in the field in the Baird Creek Greenway.  The internships are two paid positions working in environmental education. I have attached the job posting to this email and would be grateful if you could distribute it among your students; especially to those looking for internship opportunities this summer in the Green Bay area. The Baird Creek Preservation Foundation (BCPF) seeks two paid seasonal interns (approximately 30 hours per week for 7-9 weeks), starting May/June 2022 through early August, to assist education staff in running summer camps in the Baird Creek Greenway. Set hours will be Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a lunch break. Training for one week prior to the start of camps will be scheduled upon hire. Please note that this is a paid summer hire/internship. Salary is $12.00 per hour.

Baird Creek Preservation Foundation: Invasive Species Internship

The Baird Creek Preservation Foundation (BCPF) seeks two paid seasonal interns (approximately 40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks), starting May 2022, to assist Foundation staff and board members in native plant restoration and invasive species management within the Greenway. Please note that this is a paid summer hire/internship. Salary is $12.00 per hour.

Conservation Leadership Corps Training Program

The Conservation Leadership Corps training program provides excellent training to students who are interested in conservation and environmental policy. The program has received excellent reviews from all of the students that have completed the program and also from the talented instructors that have volunteered to lead the training sessions. The training program focuses on leadership, policy communication and advocacy, policy analysis and development, and policy presentation skills. The training sessions have been consistently rated as 9+ on a scale of 10 by both the students and the instructors.

Environmental Intern Wisconsin Department of Transportation

The Environmental Unit within the Division of Transportation System Development Northeast Region (Green Bay Office) has an immediate opportunity for an intern. (This position is available for 1 year or 1,039 hours, part time during the school year and up to 40 hours per week in the summer) The Environmental unit is responsible for the coordination of issues related to hazmat, archaeology, wetlands, storm water, erosion control, air quality and threatened/endangered species. The intern will be responsible for supporting and assisting the regional Environmental team in identifying and completing the necessary environmental tasks. Two of these challenging tasks include maintaining the environmental document inventory system, tracking WisDOT environmental documents and assisting in the development and maintenance of computer records and databases related to WisDOT’s environmental program and projects. The position will also be responsible for performing field work requiring the use of a GPS unit to map an area and/or conducting field reviews for hazmat or wetland water and species monitoring.

You would be working under the Regional Environmental Coordinators (RECs) applying environmental policy and environmental sciences. This is a paid opportunity at $16 an hour (it led a former student to a full-time job as a REC). This internship accepts both undergrad and graduate students.

Main qualifiers of the internship:  Knowledge of ArcGIS, knowledge of environmental policies, knowledge of environmental sciences, and ability to conduct field work and take comprehensive notes.

Exploring Indigenous Knowledge and the Green Bay Watershed Internship

First Nations continue to hold a strong connection to the bay of Green Bay and its adjoining tributaries. Incorporating Indigenous knowledge that was/is common into preserving and restoring the watershed is significant to honoring sovereignty and treaty rights. This 10-week summer internship will provide leadership growth, employment experience and cultural exploration through acknowledgement and support of First Nations connections to the Green Bay watershed.
Intern Responsibilities:  The intern will engage with UW-Green Bay’s First Nations Studies Department, Sea Grant and Cofrin Center for Biodiversity staff to complete a First Nations outreach and/or education project connecting Indigenous knowledge with restoration efforts at the Wequiock Creek Natural Area. Activities may include, but are not limited to, archival research, archeological collection, documenting and organizing oral tradition and the creation of outreach and education materials. Professional development opportunities will include attending workshops, participating in field work and engagement with First Nations communities in the surrounding area of Green Bay.

Work Setting:  Office work (50%), Off-site (50%)

The Environmental Management and Business Institute (EMBI) at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is currently seeking a graduate student or an Engineering Technology undergraduate student to participate in a Healthcare Environmental Internship program with a local healthcare provider.

Start Date: 16 hours/week April 1 – May 21, 2022 40 hours/week from May 22, 2022 – August 20, 2022 (subject to student payroll calendar limits) 16 hours/week during the next academic year – Starting August 21, 2022

All candidates should have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and possess good oral and written communication skills. A technical or environmentally focused academic background is required. Experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, would be important, as well as the ability to develop technical reports, memos or other correspondence. Organizational skills, the ability to learn new software, and some level of familiarity with statistical regression would be helpful. The intern must also follow all rules and regulations established by the healthcare provider, which will be provided during training at the facility. Any travel costs for additional required off-site training will be provided.

Land Management Interns – Woodland Dunes Nature Center and Preserve

Woodland Dunes Nature Center and Preserve is seeking four motivated students to assist with Emerald Ash Borer mitigation and coastal wetland enhancement work such as the removal of invasive plant species and the planting of native trees and shrubs. The interns will work with and lead groups of land management volunteers, help with trail maintenance and assist with citizen monitoring projects. The interns should have experience working with people and working in the outdoors. Training will be provided, but successful candidates should be comfortable working in a team setting, working outdoors (heat, mosquitoes, wet ground, etc.) and have an active interest in the natural world. Preferred areas of study include: natural sciences, conservation, ecology or a related field. This intern will work primarily with the Land Management Coordinator.

Four internships are available.  This is a 40 hour a week position for 10 weeks approximately June-August.  Pay is $12/hour.

Talaria Summer Institute

Talaria Summer Institute (TSI) is a free STEM research mentorship summer program for female and genderqueer high school students. TSI was founded in 2020 by ATHENA By Women In STEM (ABWIS), an organization that aims to breach educational inequity by providing research and STEM opportunities, with the goal of providing research opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TSI is student-run, and 2 programs have been held in 2020 and 2021 with a total of 334 mentees.

TSI is made possible by the support of graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and professors who generously volunteer their time to serve as mentors for the program. We are currently seeking mentors for the July 2022 program. The remainder of this document contains a detailed explanation of the mentorship process.

Internship position available in Northeast Wisconsin with an independent crop consulting team. You will have a great opportunity to get your feet wet in the agriculture industry.  Responsibilities include scouting crop fields and collecting data to be used for recommendations to clients. Water@UW-Madison Undergraduate Research Experience

The Water@UW-Madison Undergraduate Research Experience links faculty and staff with aspiring water science undergraduates for a summer experience. Water@UW-Madison is an interdisciplinary grassroots organization that brings together researchers from both natural and social science programs on the Madison campus. Thirteen faculty and staff have provided overviews of opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research projects on the UW-Madison campus. Stipends include salary ($6,000), living expenses in Madison ($2,300), supplies and travel. Funding for the program includes contributions from UW Sea Grant, UW Water Resources Institute and the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources – Environmental Internships

The DNR has 53 internships available through the State of Wisconsin Student Diversity Internship Program (SWSDIP) for summer of 2022!  From Natural Resource educators to GIS specialists and parks and recreation specialists to hydrogeologists, these positions are within each of DNR’s six divisions and will be located in various DNR offices. SWSDIP internships are paid positions, which provide opportunities for career development for students who might not otherwise complete an internship due to financial barriers.

Since 1974, SWSDIP has placed more than 3,600 students who have racial or ethnic minority backgrounds, identify as women, have a disability or are a veteran in internship positions with over 30 state agencies and university campuses. The skills and experience gained in these internships have helped many former interns successfully find employment within state government.

Wisconsin Sea Grant Summer Internship Program

The Wisconsin Sea Grant Summer Internship Program provides interns with an applied research, environmental outreach and/or community engagement experience under the mentorship of a career professional. Interns will assist mentors with activities that could include background research; field work; analyses, program planning, development, delivery and evaluation; and public engagement. Mentors have provided overviews of opportunities. The goal of the internship program is to contribute to a diverse workforce that understands technical and social challenges facing coastal communities and the natural environment. The program helps prepare undergraduate students for graduate school, as well as careers in aquatic sciences, environmental resource management and community engagement. Due to the ongoing pandemic and the program’s commitment to offering safe experiences, flexibility and understanding in the face of potentially changing work conditions, responsibilities and locations will be necessary.
