Skills Clinics and Events

 

Part of UREC Outdoors' overarching mission is to educate students so they might enjoy the outdoors without outside assistance. To that end, we are happy to offer a variety of outdoor skills clinics that supplement what participants will learn on our adventure trips and at our climbing tower.

Backcountry Cooking

UREC Outdoors Outing Center, KEC 152
Wednesday, 3/4 at 6:00pm

Join UREC Outdoors to learn the basics of cooking in the backcountry! Practice cooking UREC Outdoors' favorite meals on single-burner backpacking stoves and learn how to manage your camp kitchen effectively. Come hungry, rule #1 is no leftovers!

Intro to Leave No Trace (LNT)

Get ready for your next adventure and learn how to recreate responsibly with UREC Outdoors! In this clinic you will learn about the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and how they use their seven principles to protect and respect outdoor areas. Join us for activities and fun as we learn how to "Take only pictures, leave only footprints"!

Intro to Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and Kayak

UREC Outdoors Outing Center, KEC 152
Wednesday, 4/29 at 6:00pm

Join us for this intro course in how to use stand up paddleboards and kayaks! Learn how to set up and use your SUP by practicing fin placement, basic paddle strokes, and how to enter/exit the water effectively. Become a better kayaker by learning how to pack your kayaking equipment effectively and by practicing kayak-specific paddle strokes.

Belay Clinics

  • Don’t want to wait on staff to climb? Learn how to belay for yourself at the UREC Climbing Tower!
  • Belay Clinics are FREE for students and typically take 2-3 hours.
  • Held on the first and third Monday of every month at 6pm.
  • Please sign up beforehand by visiting the UREC Outdoors Outing Center or speak with tower staff during open hours.

February Open House

Celebrate the official opening of the UREC Outdoors Outing Center (KEC 152) with special deals on equipment sales and gear rentals. For the month of February, make any purchase in the outing center and receive a coupon for 25% off a future equipment rental.

Saturday Open Climb

Join us for a special open day at the UREC Climbing Tower! Take advantage of this open Saturday to bring yourself, friends, and family in to enjoy this unique feature of our campus and the Kress Events Center.

Luminary Lit Snowshoe Hike

UWGB Cofrin Arboretum

Join UREC Outdoors and Healthy Choices Task Force to kick off love week in the best way with our luminary lit snowshoe hike! Meet us at the warming tent across the street from the softball stadium (near the intramural recreation field) any time between 4 and 6 pm for this event. Snowshoeing equipment, coffee, and hot chocolate provided!
 

Mile-High Challenge Week

UREC Climbing Tower
Monday, 3/30 - Friday, 4/3

Register by yourself or with a climbing buddy and attempt to climb one mile on the UREC climbing tower within one week! Complete the 189 climbs within the allotted week and receive a free t-shirt.
