Tohoro Akakpo

Dr. Akakpo's teaching experience varies from teaching undergraduate courses in public relations and business ethics to master's level social work courses in settings from a small, private university to a large, public university. He is well-versed, with a full range of educational courses in public and social welfare policy as well as social work practice. His work experience is in the field of children, youth and families. He worked with the Michigan Department of Human Services child welfare programs and Bureau of Juvenile Justice for over eleven years. He has a passion for making a difference in the lives of young people who for one reason or another made choices that brought them in conflict with law.

Dr. Akakpo’s professional interest areas of practice include clinical social work, treatment of adolescent sexual abusers and mental health, and treatment of issues of concern to African immigrants. His scholarly interests include at-risk families and juvenile delinquents; juveniles transitioning from residential facilities into community; evaluation of nonsexual crimes committed juvenile sexual offenders; child abuse and neglect; international social work, child labor and human trafficking; issues of privilege and oppression; and the role of non-governmental organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa
