Supervisor Training Courses
Learn the foundations, best practices and ethics of clinical supervision. Gain insight into developing self-awareness as a supervisor and how to handle challenging situations. Each session is offered asynchronously over a three-week period with six hours of continuing education per session.
Foundations of Clinical Supervision
January 18 - February 5, 2027
This training addresses core elements of clinical supervision, the supervisory relationship and adapting supervision to the developmental level of the supervisee. Course objectives include:
- Understand legal, administrative, and professional standards for supervision
- Explore developmental framework for supervised practice
- Develop strategies for supervision responsive to culture and differences.
- Evaluate dimensions of successful supervisory relationships
- Formalizing the supervisory relationship
Best Practices in Clinical Supervision
February 8 - February 26, 2027
Expanding on the prior training, participants will explore the research and approaches to supervision and develop strategies to incorporate best practice in their supervision. Course objectives include:
- Explore evidenced based practices for supervision
- Discuss use of technology in supervision
- Understand the role of culture in supervisory relationships
- Determine strategies for exploring client needs specific to behavioral health conditions
- Apply concepts to case scenarios
Ethics of Clinical Supervision
March 1 - March 19, 2027
Providing ethically sound supervision is the focus of this session where ethical responsibilities will be explored. The session will include application to various ethical situations which can arise in practice. Course objectives include:
- Outline the ethical responsibilities inherent in clinical supervision
- Explore approaches to prevention of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue
- Apply ethical guidelines to practice scenarios
- Examine self-care strategies applicable to supervisory roles
Advanced Clinical Supervision: Reflective Supervision
March 22 - April 9, 2027
Self-awareness is a key element of growth and development as practitioners—both for supervisees and those who are supervising them. Included in the topic will be specific attention to cultural and developmental factors toward enhancing self-reflection in our practice. Course objectives include:
- Understand concept and practice of reflective supervision
- Determine how to address developmental needs of supervisees with reflective supervision
- Explore the role of culture in the supervisory relationship
- Explore effective application of reflective supervision
Advanced Clinical Supervision: Challenging Situations
April 12 - April 30, 2027
The final session of the series focuses on situations in practice that can prove significant while working with clients. Attention to well-being and ongoing development for continued ethical supervisory practices is included. Course objectives include:
- Assist with the impact of trauma and suicide within supervision
- Explore needs of unique populations within supervision (e.g. LGBTQ, Addictions, Disabilities)
- Examine transference/countertransference in the supervisory relationship
- Effectively identify risks and protections as it relates to secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, and the role of supervision
- Develop plan for continued professional development toward continual improvement of supervisory practice

Instructor

Joan Groessl
Dr. Groessl serves students primarily in the graduate social work program. Her social work practice experience included twenty years in county mental health services, supervision and administration. She has serves as consultant and provides a range of trainings for human services professionals.Joan currently serves as chair of the Continuing Education Committee and is a former board member for the National Association of Social Workers-Wisconsin Chapter. She is active in her community serving boards for Algoma Venture Academy and Us2 Behavioral Health.
