Next Steps for New Grad Students

You’re admitted. Now let’s get you ready to rise.

After receiving your admission letter, there are a few important steps to complete before you can register for classes and begin your graduate journey. This page walks you through what to do next—from setting up your account and email to connecting with your advisor and preparing for your first semester.

Graduate students collaborate in a graduate class, using notebooks and a laptop.

Begin Your Graduate Next Steps

Complete each step in order to ensure a smooth start to your advanced education at UW-Green Bay. If you have questions along the way, our Graduate Studies team is here to support you every step of the way.

1 Account Setup

Set your password to access your UW-Green Bay student account. You’ll use this account to access SIS, email and other secure systems.

2 Access Your Email

Your UW-Green Bay email is the primary communication channel for Graduate Studies, advising, financial aid and student billing. Make sure you have this set up and are regularly checking this email as soon as possible.

  • If you’ve had SIS access before, you may need to reset your password
  • If you are having any issues logging in or need help setting up your account, contact GBIT.

3Accept Payment Agreement

A registration hold is automatically placed on all student accounts each term. It will restrict you from registering until you review and accept the Payment Agreement.

  • The hold appears about two weeks before registration opens.
  • You’ll receive an email from the Registrar’s Office with registration information, along with a reminder to review holds
  • For questions regarding your charges, please call Student Billing at 920-465-2224, Room 1300 Student Services Building.

4Contact Your Advisor

In your SIS account, there will be a box on the right-hand side indicating your advisor’s name and contact information. This person has been assigned to you based on your program. Reach out to your advisor before course registration to select the appropriate classes and again prior to the start of classes or at least once during the semester to check in. Your advisor can answer any questions on courses, course transfers, course substitutions, program details and your path to graduation.

5Register for Classes

Find out how and when to register for both collaborative and non-collaborative programs.

UW Online Collaborative Programs

If you’re in a Wisconsin Online Collaborative program (Applied Biotechnology, Biodiversity Conservation & Management, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Health & Wellness Management or Sustainable Management), your course registration process is a little different:

  1. Your success coach will contact you once you have received your UW-Green Bay admission letter to complete the honor code requirement with you.
  2. Afterward, you will receive information on how to request your permission numbers needed to enroll in courses. You’ll request permission numbers every semester to enroll in your collaborative program courses. Semester start dates for collaborative programs are later than non-collaborative programs.
  3. You'll use your permission numbers to enroll in courses via SIS (Student Information System). For instructions, see how to register

Adding or Dropping Courses After the Drop Date

Any courses added or dropped after Week 2 will result in fee liabilities of 50% to 100% of fees. For additional billing information, see Student Billing Resources. Please use the SIS (Student Information System) to be sure you are registered for the correct classes and sections before this date. For questions regarding your payments, UW-Green Bay billing policies or procedures, call Student Billing at 920-465-2224

6Seek funding

Put the wheels in motion to fund your education—apply for financial aid, loans and scholarships. Check with your employer to see if they'll offer tuition assistance or look for student work and graduate assistantships.
