Enroll for Your Badge

The Phoenix Green Teacher Badge program is overseen by the UWGB Sustainability Committee and is administered by the UWGB Office of Sustainability, with assistance from the UWGB Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning (CATL).

The program recognizes UWGB instructors who promote environmental sustainability through their teaching and seek to minimize negative environmental impacts associated with teaching. Instructors who successfully apply for the badge will receive a dated digital badge that they can display on syllabi, Canvas, webpages, etc. Badge recipients will also be displayed on the UWGB Sustainability webpage.

To apply for the badge, instructors complete a survey that will evaluate their green teaching behaviors in several areas. In addition to assessing the extent to which they follow best practices and promote sustainability, the survey awards points for “bonus” activities that instructors themselves identify and describe.

At the end of the survey, instructors will receive a score that the Office of Sustainability will use to determine whether they qualify for a Phoenix Green Teacher Badge at the level of Bronze, Silver, or Gold. If applicable, the Office of Sustainability will send applicants a digital badge via email.

For instructors who earn a badge during the inaugural year of 2021-22, the badges will expire on August 31, 2022. Thereafter, badges will expire on August 31 of each year.

If you have questions or suggestions regarding the Phoenix Green Teaching Badge, please contact John Arendt, Director of the Office of Sustainability, at arendtj@uwgb.edu.

Background and Acknowledgments:

The Phoenix Green Teaching Badge proposal was initiated by Nathan Kraftcheck (Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning) during the 2019–20 academic year. He was inspired by the Green teaching Certificate at American University. The Sustainability Committee, with additional assistance from Kraftcheck, continued to develop the proposal during the 2020–21 academic year. Samantha Mahoney (Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning) designed and produced the badges. A working group composed of Kraftcheck, John Arendt, Georjeanna Wilson-Doenges, and David Voelker collaborated to complete the survey for a Spring 2021 launch, during Earth Week. The Sustainability Committee thanks everyone who contributed to this project!
