in Geriatric Health

Life expectancy has increased dramatically over the last century. A longer life provides more opportunity for personal fulfillment and contribution, but it can also be associated with illness, discomfort, disability and dependency at the end of life.

The year 2030 marks an important demographic turning point in U.S. history when all baby boomers will be older than age 65.

This means that in a couple decades, older people are projected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history

This milestone in the aging population will demand a new approach to healthy aging that’s skilled in assessing patient preferences and values and translating them into prevention, intervention and advance care planning. This new approach will cross disciplines in caring for the complex needs of patients. The burgeoning growth of people age 65 and older ensures that individuals with a specialization in geriatrics will be high value.

Accelerated & Online Format

The accelerated online format provides flexibility that will allow you to balance your work and family responsibilities while continuing your education and advancing your career. The non-credit certificate can be completed in under a year. Each course is six weeks in length.
 
Core Certificate Courses                                                                         
FUNDAMENTALS OF GERONTOLOGY

This course will examine the Social, Biological and Psychological aspects in an aging society. Students will be able to identify age-related changes for each of the major body systems and recognize how gerontological care delivery focuses on various age-related changes.

GENERATIONS AND DIVERSITY IN AN AGING SOCIETY This course examines elements that characterize the aging population, such as diversity. Important aspects of diversity include race, ethnicity, language, gender, socio-economic status, physical ability, sexual orientation, education, and religion/spirituality.
MENTAL HEALTH This course will examine mental health in older adults, and the many factors that affect it including cognitive impairment, delirium, dementia, depression, anxiety and sleep disorders.
PERSPECTIVES ON ILLNESS AND END OF    LIFE                        This course will use a psycho-social-spiritual-cultural framework, this course will examine the impacts of chronic illness for older adults. Elements to consider in assessment for effective planning will be outlined. Application of learning will occur through case studies and interactive discussion.  Evidenced-based approaches for assisting individuals at end of life will be provided including strategies for improving well-being.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT
AND CHALLENGES
IN THE ELDERLY
This course will examine complications of medication management in the elderly that includes physical changes, polypharmacy, drug interactions and adverse reactions, self-medication practices, and financial issues.
                                                                           
SOCIAL JUSTICE PERSPECTIVE: ETHICS AND POLICY PRACTICE This course is designed to focus on advocacy and practice issues when working with older adults. Policy and law will be examined using a social justice framework.  The impact of values on policy development and implementation as well as advocacy strategies will be outlined. The course culminates with application of professional ethical standards to practice issues with older adults.

All successful candidates must have a High School level analytical ability and be proficient in reading, writing and math. Candidates should also be comfortable with technology and computers with some experience of Microsoft Word. Candidates should be capable of writing reports and taking online exams using a laptop/PC.
