Distance Education Course Definition

Distance Education Online courses are defined as:
  • Distance-delivered courses – Courses in which at least 75 percent of the instruction and interaction occurs via electronic communication, correspondence or equivalent mechanisms, with the faculty and students physically separated from each other.
  • Distance-delivered programs – Certificate or degree programs in which 50 percent or more of the required courses may be taken as distance-delivered courses.
  • Distance education - Education that uses one or more of the technologies listed below to deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and to support regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor, either synchronously or asynchronously.
Technologies used in Distance Education may include:
  • The internet
  • One-way and two-way transmissions through open broadcast;, closed circuit; cable; microwave; broadband lines; fiber optics; satellite; or wireless communication devices.
  • Audio conferencing.
  • Video cassettes, DVDs, and CD-ROMs --- when the cassette, DVD or CD-ROM are used in conjunction with any of the above listed technologies for a course.

Distance Education Course Fee -- FALL 2020

To assist students with the current COVID-19 pandemic, for the FALL 2020 term we have reduced the distance education fee from $25.00 per credit to $12.50 per credit.  The course fee will be assessed for all distance education courses.

Distance Education courses include Online, Interactive Video, Virtual Classroom, Blended, and Streaming Online capable courses. These funds will be used to (1) cover the costs associated with purchasing and maintaining the software that is used to develop and deliver distance education courses; (2) cover the costs of state authorization fees for distance delivery; (3) offset the costs of staffing student support services (e.g. Instructional Design, Help Desk, Library, Advising, Tutoring, etc.) (4) cover the costs associated with purchasing or licensing online library resources; (5) provide specialized training to faculty and teaching academic staff who develop, deliver, and/or support distance education courses; and (6) promote the development of new distance education programs.  A full refund of this fee will only occur during the 100% refund period (add/drop period) of a semester or session.

For information regarding academic policies and procedures, please contact the Registrar's Office.

Grad Student Taking Undergrad Course or Undergrad Student taking Grad Course

The assessment of undergraduate tuition versus graduate tuition should be based upon the level of enrollment, i.e., a student enrolled as a graduate student taking some undergraduate courses shall be assessed graduate level fees for all credits. Conversely, an undergraduate student taking a graduate level course shall be assessed undergraduate level fees for all credits, as long as the graduate level course is not later used toward a graduate degree. If these graduate courses are later used toward a graduate degree, the student may be assessed the fee differential at that time.
The student will make this request through the Registrar's office, with a copy to Student Billing. Additional fee assessment will be calculated and due upon this request.

Audit Credits

Audit credits count as full value in determination of a total credit load.  For more information on 'Audit' credits please refer to our Audit Students page.

Midwest Student Exchange Program
