Welcome to UW-Green Bay’s Area Coordinator (AC) Web site! This site has been created to help you learn more about our Area Coordinator position,  our campus community and the greater Green Bay area. We take pride in our unique housing program at UW-Green Bay, and the opportunities it provides for our students and staff. The campus and community are beautiful! The campus has a rural, north woods feel to it, but it is just minutes from the City of Green Bay with more than 250,000 people. Nature and environment are important to people in northeast Wisconsin, as is a strong work ethic, education, and family.

We know that the AC position at UW-Green Bay may not be for everyone. We also know it can be an incredible opportunity for a special few. Our AC position offers unique opportunities to work in an AC team environment that most hall directors never experience.

Are you someone who would thrive in an environment where all the ACs have their offices in the Community Center, right next to each other? This gives ACs the opportunity to work collaboratively on many projects and work closely with many RAs outside of their area of responsibility.

Position

The Community Development team is comprised of five Area Coordinators (ACs) and the Assistant Director of Residence Life. Each Area Coordinator supervises a team of 12-14 Resident Assistants (RAs), two of whom are Community Advisors (CAs). The Area Coordinator position is a 12-month live-in position with responsibilities which include staff selection and recruitment, training and supervision, oversight for community development and programming, student advising and conflict resolution, on-call duty rotation and crisis response, and summer program administration.

Area Coordinator apartments are furnished and include cable and internet service, washer and dryer, dishwasher, full-size refrigerator, and range. Apartments vary in size from two-bedroom to three bedrooms with spacious kitchens and living rooms. Spouses, domestic partners, and families are welcome. For more information, see the Apartment Residency Policy Agreement. Pets are allowed in accordance with the Area Coordinator Pet Policy.

This position offers a competitive starting salary of $35,568, a partial meal plan ($2,500/yr.) for meeting with students and colleagues. University employees receive a state benefits package including medical insurance, participation in the Wisconsin Retirement system, paid vacation, and more.

ACs are able to access professional development funds up to $1000 per year with approval from their supervisor. Participation in UMR-ACUHO, WCPA and other professional housing (or Student Affairs) conferences is encouraged, as is, committee membership. ACs are given multiple campus opportunities to participate in faculty and staff conferences, webinars and video-conferences.

Screening

All applications completed by the initial screening date will be given first consideration. Those applicants meeting minimum requirements will be given an opportunity to complete a phone interview or interview in person at the Oshkosh Placement Exchange (OPE)  in Oshkosh, WI.

Phone Interviews/OPE Meetings/Interviews

Candidates successfully meeting the requirements will be offered an interview at OPE or via a conference call once there is a vacancy. One or more professionals will participate in the interview.

On-Campus interviews (once an official vacancy occurs) 

Selected candidates will be offered an on-campus interview. On-campus interviews typically are scheduled for one evening and the following day. They may consist of:

  • Interviews with student leaders, Residence Life staff, and Student Affairs Staff
  • Tours of the campus, the residence halls, apartments, and one of the AC apartments.
  • Additional candidate interests (special interest groups, community resources, etc.) will be accommodated, if time allows.

Process for Anticipated Openings

In years where no actual position is vacant, we will have an “Anticipated opening” only. We will collect resumes and offer OPE interviews in preparation of the anticipated vacancy which may occur later in the spring or summer. There will be no on-campus interviews until after an actual vacancy happens and an official search process has been approved by the institution.

UWGB and Green Bay cannot pretend to have this all figured out. We struggle like all campuses and communities do with diversity issues. Safe and Inclusive Living

Current Young Professionals Network of Green BayThe Office of Residence Life was pleased to announce the implementation of a new residential option in the fall of 2014. The Safe And Inclusive Living community, commonly called SAIL, embarked on its first semester with a full roster of residents on the wing. SAIL is defined as a campus housing alternative in which two or more students mutually agree to share a university apartment with individual bedrooms regardless of the occupants’ sex, gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation. Through the creation of this community, transgender and gender non-conforming students and their allies, can now choose to live in an open and supportive environment where they can rest assured their neighbors are striving to understand and support one another’s sexual orientation, gender identities and life choices. We hope to expand our efforts for this community to embrace a larger demand next year.

Professional Development Opportunities

Current Young Professionals Network of Green BayArea Coordinators have a wide range of professional development options available including participation in campus and departmental committees, involvement in state, regional and national associations, and a number of other on-campus professional development activities. Conference attendance and participation in professional committees and associations such as UMR-ACUHO, WCPA, etc is encouraged and supported. In addition, Area Coordinator staff have the opportunity to provide leadership at a departmental level for processes such as staff selection, training and orientation, summer conferences, and more.

Collaboration

Collaboration is a major focus of our Community Development Team (ACs and Assistant Director). Residence Life is part of the Student Affairs team consisting of Student Life (Activities), Counseling and Health, American Intercultural and the Dean of Student Office (which housing Judicial Affairs). We work closely with these offices year round to provide administrative and programmatic efforts to our students. For example, we actively serve on the two programmatic task forces (Healthy Choices and Diversity) structured through the Dean of Students Office. Each task force has professional staff and students working together from various Student Affairs departments (Student Life, Counseling and Health, Judicial Services, and American Intercultural Center). They work with Resident Assistants (RAs), Ambassadors, and other student leaders to develop campus-wide programs and efforts to fill in the gaps in services on the campus.

Our ACs also collaborate with the Dean of Students (DOS) Office to train and advise two to three Peer Conduct Review Boards (PCRBs). Residents who violate university or housing policy are sent to a Peer Conduct Review Board for adjudication and sanction recommendation. A PCRB hears the student’s case and gives a recommended sanction to DOS. ACs play an important role in this student educational process.

Res. Life also has two seats on the Student Review Team (SRT), a campus behavioral intervention team that keeps a close eye out for students who are struggling to succeed because of mental health or serious behavioral problems. ACs play a crucial role in identifying early warning signs and alerting the SRT team of students who are struggling. ACs, likewise, are kept abreast of students within housing that need special attention.

Our Community Development Team (5 ACs and Assistant Director) all have our offices on the same wing of the Community Center (Residence Life Office) so we collaborative frequently on communities, administrative responsibilities and processes, and programs. All ACs get opportunities to lead, or be a part of, different Res. Life committees and projects like RA training, RA selection, AC search, RA Recognition, learning communities, resource room, Res. Life webpage development, etc. It is crucial that ACs enjoy working as part of a close knit team.
